Yes not looking good as a bit of yellow metal in the oil from the thrusts is one thing but magnetic material indicates something more serious. Carba do you know if the oil in the differential has been changed previously? Did it look like really old oil, smelly and black?

This car has not been treated well, the oil was black, smelly and old 😓 the problem is to get the differential 3.63:1 in Spain, it is the most wanted

I take it Carba that you have a drain plug in your differential? This is not original so the oil must have been changed at least when the plug was fitted which makes me think its poor condition is more likely due to a bearing failing inside...

As you probably know installing new bearings is quite a specialised job as you need shims and tools to achieve the correct tolerances and preloads. It will be difficult in Spain to find someone who can do this☹️

It has a filling cap, that's where I've emptied with the help of a tube and a syringe, I don't think it's difficult to change the side bearing of the differential, I would try it myself, I know people with notions of basic mechanics who have done it

Oh so the oil might be very old anyway?

Yes the side bearing is pretty easy and can be done without even removing the diff. However I would expect one of those to make more noise when turning the car one way or the other as the thrust from the back wheels changes. Your symptoms of more noise on a trailing throttle seem to me its more likely a pinnion bearing but Im no expert😃

learning curve back in the 60s i sheared the output shaft on my rusty 948 herald . down the road in dads garage with a torch

as no power there, dropped the whole diff to find the output shafts and bearings are easy to remove on the car ...too late but you learn every day but as a 19yr old some things you learn the hard way . how to get the spring back in the dark was exciting
