Pete Lewis
Tom two things the point spring leaf appears to be touching the fixing clamp screw head and the plastic insulator must hold the spring leaf away from the post it fits over it looks like the spring is in contact with the verticle post the insulator fits over so two possible point earthing problems Pete
tomopope
Pete - Ah of course that's stupid on my behalf. I'll check and get back to you John - Excuse my ignorance, what's CB?
Pete Lewis
how about CB = contact breaker = points , both are common used terms Pete

tomopope
Fixed the points but still no spark - bugger So checked the plug wired directly to the coil as John suggested - still no spark Looks like it's the coil then (and hopefully nothing else). Will get one ordered !
Pete Lewis
hold the coil HT lead near the block and get it cranked over , the coil should spark across to the block Pete
tomopope
I'm sorry chaps but I think I'm close to giving in and calling out a mechanic! This is now all getting beyond my novice skills. New coil arrived today and went in: - Checked for spark from the king lead = now I get a yellow / orange spark to the block - Checked for spark at the plugs = again now I get yellow / orange spark at the tips - Checked for fuel at the carbs - all good Is orange a problem? I've heard different things. I've got an external pack rigged up to the battery too to try and give it as much juice as I can When it turns over it did sound like it was catching slightly, little puff of smoke from the rocker cover cap hole, but I couldn't recreate it again. All in all I think I've bothered you all enough and it's time to call in the professionals unfortunately (I move house on Friday) - unless anyone has any last ideas?! TomL
Tom, Don't despair! Have you got a can of "Easy Start". This is something that is great at coaxing reluctant-starting engines into life, provided that you're getting a spark, which you are. It's got to be worth a try. The other thing I would suggest, as you say you're new to all of this, is to get yourself a copy of the "AA Book of the Car". First published in 1970, it's a great explanation of how our sort of cars work, covering just about every aspect. I bought my copy from a charity shop a few years ago now, but I dare say some sort of auction site might be able to help. There's a section on fault-finding. Do let us know how you're getting on. dougbgt6
Tom, I don't know where in London you are but there are two local area meetings possibly within striking distance. Thames area meet tomorrow night at the George Inn in Wraysbury.. It's near Windsor just off the M4. Alternatively the M25 East area are meeting at the Warf in Dartford on Sunday evening. There will be somebody at either meeting can help you.
tomopope
Thanks - unfortunately still can't get it to start. Getting the spark, got the right voltage at the coil, and started fiddling with the dizzy position as it does catch every now and then but still no joy. Had the plugs out, cleaned and heated up too just in case. Unless anyone knows of a decent call-out mechanic (the one I had this morning didn't know the first thing about older cars) it's going to have to go on a low-loader and get to a specialist garage unfortunately.
