Lumpy running, cuts out then won’t start.

Our Mk2 Vitesse is driving us mad. Following starting and running problems (backfiring and very lumpy) we had a mechanic look at it. We picked it up and it was running smoothly for about 5 miles until it suddenly became lumpy, lost power and wouldn’t start. New distributor, points, plugs and sparking ok. Fuel pump working and fuel getting to the carbs (although may be not evenly)? Please help!!!

has all the hall marks of rubber slivers floating about in the supply to the carbs  blocking the float jet when fuel is in demand   frequenlt happens after messing about with the fuel hoses

back fires can be condenser related , as can manifold air leaks

no easily  you cant see what your doing with  the  float and jet whilst on car unless you have 50 50 sight and are a contortionist  you have 6 scres to undo and then remove the foat from its clips and get a socket on the valve ....not a easy job,

best pop them off and remove  float chamber on a bench , remove the float jet and behind it will be a likely  culprit.

always pump a little fuel into a jar to flush them out of the supply line before refitting, the feed hole in the float needel is very small

does  not take much to block it up   these always occur following twiddling, you push the hose onto a sharp metal pipe and it slices a small sliver of inside after the filters

can be a plague they breed like rabbits
