Vitessse Mk 2 Exhaust

I'm struggling to find an exhaust system that is not too loud? the baffles in the system I had for over 20 years fell apart. I replaced it with a straight through silencer and that was very loud I have just fitted a twin box system that is not quite as loud but very boomy especially at about 300 rpm. The engine has a high lift cam an 1.75 SU's. Has any one any suggestions to an exhaust that will be relatively quite but not sap power. The twin box system I have fitted does not have the resonator would fitting one help? Thanks David

A centre box will make a useful difference. I have a GT6 Mk3 centre box on my Mk2 with a stainless twin rear.

Various short straight-throughs (cherry bomb type) are available and can be added into the centre section where the chassis lips are flared downwards. Careful alignment is required to prevent rattling and some bend down the flanges a bit to get more clearance.

What twin system are you using?

Thanks Ian.

The two silencer boxes are secondhand so not sure of the original make. They are a few years old and have the large diameter extensions.the rest of the system is straight through tubing.

I'm wondering if the booming sound is because they are attached the the spare wheel well? it could be acting like a drum and amplifying the noises.

With the Vitesse there is very little clearance in the chassis for a additional silencer. Unless I could find one which is 3" Diameter in which case would it do much.

Thanks again for your reply.

It looks as though you have direct fixing between the silencer box and the brackets fixed to floor and if so I would expect this to transmit quite a bit of sound. I have used rubber bobbins (onto the front face of the rear valance) but this is not really the correct use of them and they do fail in shear after a few years. I do have additional fixings to the pipes at the front end of the boxes onto the diff as well, so it isn't just hanging on the rear mounts. Perhaps a trip to your local exhaust fitter might provide a suitable fitting to provide some isolation for your situation.

See photo showing the centre box on my GT6. I would have thought the space between the chassis rails on the Vitesse is the same, so a centre box should be achievable.

Have other Vitesse owners done this?

Thanks for the reply. The exhaust boxes are on short rubber straps but i think they are transmitting noise to the boot floor I may try to make a frame that connects to the Chassis Extensions.

I like the look of your centre exhaust section, very neat.

Thanks Ian.

Looking at the various versions I can see that you are correct they do look shorter. I'm stuck with them now so I'll try to fix the supports to the chassis instead of the boot floor and add a centre box !!! Could be a longer job than I thought

David.
