cliff.b
Hi all. Getting some steering wheel movement on my 78 Spit. Is what I am looking at here the upper steering column bush or is that behind the switchgear? Should I be seeing any movement of the inner column at all here
cliff.b
Or is this it?
Colin Lindsay
That looks to me like the upper bush; different to my own Triumphs but looks easier to get at. You'll need slight movement, enough to let the column turn, but not excessive ie wobbling about over bumps. I've no idea how easy they are to change, certainly easier than the earlier cars, but they're only about £2 to buy.
johny
well they all do that and eventually its an MOT fail (if noticed) but unless youre really bored I would put it on the to do list....
cliff.b
It was the 2nd picture & just pulled out with a spring hook. I can see why there was excessive play
johny
That does look easier to do than the older design!

I think only the later 1500s are like this. Just pulled out so I guess (hope) new one will push in easily. Also found movement in the outer column as well, at the upper mounting bracket. Was tight but not clamping sufficiently so added a little packing in the v slots and no detectable movement now.

It probably means they were put in at the factory and have lasted fifty years since... All mine were like that.

johny
Im sure its the second time in my Vitesse but theres the quality of pattern parts to consider plus in that model the bushes have an especially hard life because of the combination of heavy steering and large steering wheel meaning that a lot of side force is applied... Oh well, at least it's a cheap fix 👍
cliff.b
New bush has arrived and slots in either different. One end they are wider, deeper and with a chamfered base. Any ideas which way round it should be inserted? Can't copy old one as neither end has survived.
johny
You really need a manual but in the meantime a well known supplier's parts webpage shows it like this with the steering wheel at the top out of the image...
