Hello Clive,i have a specially made extension for the carrier which increases it by about an inch,i think because i have a Vitesse flywheel which is shallower anyway.
The extension was originally fitted,i cant for the life of me remember why i changed it,i remember the original carrier was steel and i fitted a brass one and all was ok until now.
Going to start taking it out at the weekend.

Got the pipe fitting changed by my local old school garage.Fitted the 1600 slave and...no difference, can`t get the bloody thing in gear and the arm seems to be so close to the
bell housing when clutch is pressed there must be something going on with the carrier.
I suppose it will have to come out, which is a right royal pita.
Must change my signature to 0 triumphs working.

More advice needed..
tried to fit a 1600 slave today, shortened the rod by about an inch as the slave sits further forward, problem is the pipe fitting is smaller on the 1600 slave.
Looked at various suppliers and all list one pipe for sixes and one for four cylinder units,no idea whether to get a new pipe or just a fitting and a flaring tool,if so what size?.
Cheers

FH is just larger bearings on the crank, supposedly less tuneable if you want to rev the nuts of it,small bearing crank required for that.
You wouldn`t notice the difference in a standard car,i ran it with a 3.63 diff and overdrive gearbox and it would sit happily at 70+ on a run.

XTW is Roy Laceys 2.5 GT6.
Done 2 RBRR`s,one in my Vitesse and one in my Herald, not for the faint hearted, especially in a 2 man crew.Worth doing but i`ve done it now and stick to more relaxed tours.

If you want it back on the road quickly i have just removed a 1300 from my Herald in order to fit a 1500,its unknown mileage and spec, as it came as a spare with the car i rescued after being off the road for 30 years,it`s an FH engine so large bearing.
I took the head off before fitting it and saw it has +20 pistons,so must have been rebuilt in the 70`s.I ran it in my Herald for 5 years including completing the CT Round Britain run in it in 2014.
If it was me i would get the car on the road and then fix the original engine over time.

My daughters both had modern Mini Coopers,i used to own a 1968 Cooper, great car.Failed to persuade them on the merit of old ones.
One of the moderns was a nightmare and the other was fine, early ones(pre 2006) had Chrysler engines which had a tendency to over heat. After 2006 they were Peugeot which liked to throw the cam chains.Don`t know about newish ones but best get the fault codes read and get it dealt with before major failure.
Just remembered the early ones were known for the power steering pumps failing suddenly which was interesting for the largely female ownership suddenly being unable to turn the wheel.

Not a fan of laying our cars up but its your choice.I use my Herald and Vitesse (Vitesse owned since 1985) all year in any weather, went to Goodwood from Surrey a couple of years ago in November with the roof off at -2 degrees, lovely.
I think these cars need to be used, less use = more issues imho. Now off to get the clutch working...

I can try that Pete,i`ve ordered a Vitesse 1600 slave to see what that does.

Thanks for the replies, clutch master is the original whatever size that is.Slave is a PI one which looks the same as the one i had on there which was probably a normal saloon one.
Slippage was due to the rod being too long and the clutch not disengaging enough,i will go to my lockup later and have a look at the travel of the arm,it definitely doesn`t feel there`s enough travel.
Only one option for the pin on the arm Nick.
I remember when first built i had a bearing carrier that was half an inch longer than standard but the clutch didn`t feel right,i put a brass one on it and it has been fine until the issues started.
I think the fact i could get it in gear without issue with the long rod in probably means the friction plate isn`t knackered.I will investigate Clives combo of master and slave.
Cheers

Sure i posted on this a while ago but cannot find it,so here goes...
Mk 1 Vitesse CV,2.5 PI engine with Saloon o/d box,Sprint cross shaft upside down with trimmed slave lever.
Last year the car became difficult to get in gear,i checked all the hydraulics and they seemed ok,swapped the slave cylinder just because i had one,no difference.
I looked at the slave pushrod to see if it was too short,it had to be trimmed as the full length one wont fit on this setup,i bought another one and made it 3/4 of an inch longer than the one in there, drove it,hey presto, easy to get in gear,no crunching.
Put it all back together, tunnel and carpet in etc. decided to go down the coast, first attempt at hard acceleration resulted in big slippage..
Tried another pushrod in between the 2 lengths,ok while moving but cant get it in gear when stationery.
It definitely seems to be not enough pedal travel,i wondered if because i still have the Vitesse master cylinder with a saloon slave maybe this may be the issue?,obviously when the clutch is brand new it might not matter?.Engine and clutch is about 15000 miles old.
Pretty sure it was a decent spec AP clutch.
Sorry for the long post but i really don`t want to take the box out unless absolutely necessary.

Tried Mike Papworth?,he built my 3:27 for my Vitesse with a CW+P supplied by him, also TR7 carrier.

Looks like a Pheonix one to me from the joints,Moss and Rimmer sell them.
I had a 6 pot one on my Vitesse which was an awful fit,now removed as i was lucky enough to find an original MTP one.

Invested in the newly available 4 pot caliper for type 14 type cars today, well pleased with the quality and cost,Rimmers are doing 15% off Triumph stuff.
A note on the sheet accompanying them says..Not suitable for use with Mineral Oil fluid, what type is that?,the car has Silicone in it at present,is that it?.

Thanks for all the replies,i was leaning towards fitting a cooler so i think its the way to go,i will try the Millers 20/60 too.(thanks Clive, this is the car i did the 2014 RBRR in on the 1300).
And to Nick, mine has overdrive and 3:63 diff so its more relaxed even on the 1300.Soon to be CV shafts too.
Just need to buy a 123 Tune and 4 pot calipers now..

Hello Richard,
Thanks for the reply,i realise zinc is nothing to do with the shear factor.I have a running in oil as well but the HR 1 is a mineral multigrade for use after about the first 500 miles.
I have a 2.5L vitesse thats puts out close to 170 bhp without a cooler and that maintains excellent pressure even after a good fast run.I always used Valvoline VR 1 in that but was told recently the spec of this has changed to enable the SAE rating?(no idea).
I have an original SAH cooler kit in my shed brand new in the box,but guess the 40+ year old hoses are not to be trusted.
By the way the new engine has a modified pump with a bigger rotor that will give more capacity.
Plastic fan on the water pump.

So i am about to fit my newly built engine to my Herald, its a Spit 1500,hairy-ish cam, ported head, roller rockers, all balanced rotating parts,Nitrided crank etc.
10:1 compression.
Got a full width alloy rad to go in but sticking with the mechanical fan for now.
I have heard mixed opinions on these engines running the (centre) mains after long runs due to oil issues, what`s the learned opinions on fitting a cooler?.
I have been recommended Joe Gibbs HR 1 racing oil for its high Zinc content.(15w/50 1250ppm zinc)
Don`t want to waste good money if it dies after a long run, won`t be revving the balls off it but we do a lot of long tours which include long motorway runs sometimes.

I am about to drop my new 1500 engine into my Herald, anyone know which pump i need?.
May go electric eventually but for now i want the normal mechanical one,Canleys list 1500 early and late, also with or without spacer.
Engine number is no longer visible but i can make out H7......... (at the start).
Thanks

Interesting as on Saturday i removed the water inlet on the pump housing next to the sender, fitting it to my new engine with an alloy housing, the pipe was 90% blocked by large flakes of rust leaving only a small hole for water.
Car never over heated though.

See you at the OST in August.

They are not bolted at all, they are welded to the three outriggers front, centre and rear.

Are you taking it to Leatherhead Mark?.

I have an unused Long tract HS6 manifold that has been skimmed to take the angle out, brain fade prevents me from remembering why i never used it,maybe because with Vitesse front and rear engine plates and Carbs with Sprint dashpots i didn`t need to!.
