I had a smiths head drive and magnetiser in my warranty test room but too big to take home when the factory closed ,went in the skip.

if you bend the lugs a bit to remove the bezel once refitted ie fit the lugs through the slots in the case and turn it a bit you can reform the bezel with gentle use on a small vice to crimp it up tight
the seals are just rubber section dont go buying some are sold at stupid prices
some sell a length and you cut to suit
i said oil with aid of a cocktail stick

some headlamps will not be legal with LED bulbs need to do some homework on this subject .
relays can go anywhere the harness will allow .
you use relays to improve the voltage drop of the old wiring and reduce the current at the switches.
led use much lower current and dont need relays as such , but you do need to be clear on fitting to
your current lenses is ok , this was discussed a while back , both bulb types will fit but led
can add complications and MOT problems later

the needle spindle sits in jewel bearings after many years they need a spot of lubrication
you can remove the drive head once you remove the chrome bezel , this may need the lugs prising
open as the glass rubber rings turn into a awful gooey mess
two screws on the back and the guts lift out
a dab of light oil on a cocktail stick normally sorts out a stiff needle
do not remove the needle .
a spot of oil on the input spindle is worthwhile

the torque figure will be for a dry stud if its oiled you may strip at the suggested torque
its unusual for mk2 nuts /studs to give any problems .
your wrench is set in lbft not Nm ????

yes if the switch is earthing the relay
depends if the switch earths or is in the live feed
there are two schemes of wiring the od
you need a relay as d types take 10+amp to pull in then a switch in the solenoid cuts to a holding coil of 0.5amps
the 10amp is only for a second or two ,thats so long as the stroke is set correctly .

if is failed after around 50 years there is not much wrong with the design.
any "must have" ideas should be sent to room 101 saves a fortune and all the headaches that
go with these must have (not) ideas
if all you do is limited miles and drive with the smile Ha !

also use a tapered threaded fir tree hose fitting and run hose all the way to the pump if you like .
Pete

before you get into trunnionless must haves how many miles and what type of driving are you intending to perform

Might have missed ,but why do you need a stub axle ??
getting old ones out of the upright best get some heat on the upright then without a press chase it all round the garage they will be very tight on the tapered fit

Pete

no you can only apply copious amounts to the rack and wind it in and out to transpose some to the bush
Pete

idea ....can you add the castle nut to the outer end and put in a vice as its off the car ???
tighten the nyloc then when locked in the taper remove the castle nut
pete
-
it could be less but there needs some float to accommodate variations in heat
Pete
-
if its all clean the taper of the stub does normally lock up enough to torque the nyloc nut
Pete
-
and with many of the remote kits the spherical washer is cropped with sharp edges that
unless its fettles before fitting can mince the new ball in days
