  1. Thanks for all the advice already received. Whilst I haven't ordered a sealing block yet, or even checked the torque of the sump bolts I have a lower, front and rear gasket set so that's good. My question is Gasket sealer - where would you use it and what would you use - I have a small pot of Heldite. Do we do a Henry Cooper and 'splash it all over'?

    I am most definitely out of my depth here with both confidence and skill - I hit rocks with hammers not manifolds, my 'O' Level metal work 35 years ago didn't cover this! I have to find someone to do it for me - if I fail to get Ian on the job are there are any willing volunteers? I can bring the biscuits!

     

    I've had a bit of a dig around - non-destructive of course. I can see a coarse thread standing slightly proud of the manifold at the sheared banjo end - is this the banjo bolt thread or is there a sleeve? It may be clear if I had a replacement but haven't got one yet.

     

    Secondly does anyone have a spec / part number for the inlet hose connector - it seems the mk1 and 2 had a sensible nut included in it. Pt 138810 at canleys. But there doesn't seem to be any info in the usual places for the mk3.

     

    I got a leaflet from a local restoration garage who said they'd have a look - but I don't think you can beat the confidence you get from a recommended engineer.

Before I crumple into a gibbering wreck I got a contact number for Ian from Angie at HQ.  I believe he is quite difficult to get hold of.  Has anyone had any contact with him recently - I can't see any reason why the details should be wrong as his wife is a member but it just rings out, no answerphone or anything !

    So having to remove the oil pump to get it off - did that mean you re-attached the pump and refitted minus the splash gauze? 

     

    May be a silly question but how much pressure / distance can be achieved before possibly damaging the front pulley? I assume it is as attached.

     

    Again a silly question prior to reading up on the sealing block - is that done independently of the sump gasket, I assume it is behind the cover at the back of the flywheel?

    I'm not too old yet (51 this year) but most definitely have a big portion of decrepit. I am low tech and haven't got a hoist - so its a jack. I know I read somewhere that the strainer can get in the way.

     

    Once I'm happy I've reduced the oil leaks I intend to degrease and paint up - as it will be in situ I assume a brush rather than rattle can.

    Really sorry - like my manifold I'm crumbling under the stress of it all!! Unlike my problems, Clive was a figment of my imagination.

     

    And while I'm on, how come all of the expertise is down south or Northern Ireland! I live about 25 miles from where the cars were made but there doesn't seem to be a particularly strong technical presence here.

     

    Although fingers crossed, Ian Gittings lives about 5 miles away who appears to be a manifold specialist! Just trying to contact him.

    As some of you are aware I've have a bit of a hiccup getting the car on the road in relation to the cooling system.

     

    I have what appears to be two smallish oil leaks although capillary action may mean it is one. I know triumphs are renowned for it and the oil preserves the chassis but it does make a bit of a mess. One is the rocker box - easy enough. The second appears to be the sump gasket. As the engine is part stripped so should I try the in-situ lower gasket change as discussed on this and other forums?

     

    Any suggestions regarding the manifold, its not blown but fairly pitted - paint it, leave it alone?

    Below is the condition of the manifold and engine after a quick clean up.

    As you can see, the other end has also corroded. Any guidance as to what this is as it doesn't appear to have a specific part number.

     

    I think I bought a car with a very neglected cooling system - I won't even show you the radiator! I knew there was a reason why I hadn't touched the engine since I bought it 18 months ago.

     

    Now the big question - as the engine is part stripped - should I look at the entire cooling system - open pump housing, thermostat, etc? I'm in two minds as to whether abandon this year and sort the engine and bay - more of that under the engine forum. I'd sooner have the car sorted rather than a make do job.

     

    Any thoughts.

    Is Chris Witor the only place to get a stainless steel banjo bolt from? £25 seem a bit steep.

     

    As I'm now going to have to remove the manifold do I assume a renewal of the gaskets as well - anything else before my pockets become too long for my arms?

     

    I will get a replacement SS bypass pipe as well.

    Whilst the head didn't shear independently it was fused to the Banjo housing. The picture is what I have left. Is there enough left to weld or is it a removal of the manifold and take to an engineer or replace? Given the condition is it likely to have been original.

     

    Clive - I take your point but there wasn't enough left to re-attach a pipe.

    Thought I'd be going to cars in the park this weekend but whilst stripping to cooling system I encountered the below

    I knew the water pipe was bulging when I bought it but never thought the metal pipe fitting would have been totally corroded! I did note luminous green antifreeze rather than blue was in the system.

     

    Can I ask what I need to replace this? Rimmers has a 'y' adaptor kit for £75, or a heater adaptor assembly for £46.50. Paddock has a banjo adaptor for £28.50. Canleys are £31.50 (adaptor inlet manifold - brass).

     

    Whats the part actually called? I assume I will need the fibre washers  - would you suggest anything else while I'm at it?

     

    I'll obviously flush the system and have a new radiator.

  12. Ok - got the paint - tested it - it matches - must have been the lighting - phew - cost some money for the paint but it is the right colour!!!!

     

    I suppose the only issue is it doesn't quite have the gloss you get with clear coat.

     

    At least I can get on with finishing the other jobs now!

    I've had my wheels back from refurb, at last! A friend of a friend did it at a good price but loads of hassle and time.

     

     

     

    I don't have a colour point of reference so, are they Triumph Silver? If not I can get a rattle can from the club shop but will it adhere to powder coating? 

     

     

     

    Secondly the first photo show my original metal chromed centre. The second photo is an ebay aftermarket plastic which is somewhat gold in colour. Obviously original is best or do you think otherwise? Do you know anyone with gold wheels who is looking for centres?

Ahhh, you see, whilst educated and at lest used to understand the thermodynamics of metamorphism as a trained geologist that little blighter called electricity and cars has always been elusive until I try to delve into their mystical depths. I think it's one of those thing that until you have a go it is somewhat of a mystical skill.

     

    I've learnt a great deal so far but as I wiggle wires and lights that were on suddenly go off I thought it best to delve into you're knowledge to do the right thing.

     

    I suppose the critical element of earthing the whole thing is to prevent a literal shock whilst probing. All information is greatly received.

  15. Hello all, just wondering if the club might be organising a display, or any individuals would be attending the event this year. 'Apparently' one of the gatherings of vehicles in the country, 1500 last year including a beautiful local Daimler dart! 1st & 2nd July.
