  1. Gully - there's a different number for the MK1 GT6 though 307439 - just wondered if / why its different Aidan
  2. Hi I need to find a replacement sump on the engine i'm rebuilding The engine is a MK2 Vitesse and it is going into a MK1 GT6 - Which part number should I be buying or are they all the same for the 2 litre and it doesn't it matter ? Thanks Aidan

    1600 steel gasket

Hi It's just a bit of oil down the bore nothing else, - a bit of lubrication while turning the engine back and forward to set the tming. The top of the piston has s bit of pitting but it's just the surface Aidan

    1600 steel gasket

Just wanted to resurrect this as I have the same questions for my 2L mk2 6 1- is this a tin gasket? And 2- is it the right way round?? Aidan
  5. Both have been very slightly skimmed but I will double check
  6. So now the big question- head gasket- dry, or with sealant??? And it's not a recessed head Aidan
  7. Looks to be just surface only, what do you think?? (Not cleaned the threads yet!)
  8. More advice please I was going to use the original cylinder head studs as they came out cleanly On closer inspection I see that one has surface rust. Do I replace one or all? Thx Aidan
  9. Hi - I believe this is general for all 6 cylinder engines Aidan
  10. So my notes: 110 degrees is far more accurate but requires that you print off atiming disc that is then placed centrally over the flywheel (or crank).Again while no.1 piston is at TDC rotate the cam until no.2 push rod isat maximum lift (measure with a dial gauge). The timing disc should beplaced so that it reads 0 and has a marker on the engine, you can usesome wire bent to indicate the number on the disc so long as it's in nodanger of moving. Now rotate the crank clockwise until it reads 110degrees after TDC. Attach timing chain and re-check your measurements. Aidan
  11. I'll be using the 110 degree method - I have some brilliant notes on this method and have been told its more accurate Aidan
  12. Yep agree, just hhe way I put it and you were right, the pic of the sprocket yesterday was 180 out based on the marking of yhe cam behind!!
  13. That's what I said of tried to! Cam lobe 2 if you like Inlet opens and closes the next time the line on the sprocket points toward the cam
  14. Also sorted the 180 question quite simply tbh, before tdc the inlet valve opens, so I just turned the cam until the cam follower lifted then turned it further to align Just need to check this cam end float But another question I did put the cam sprocket back on to the cam using the exact same positioning ad I took it off so not turning it 90 degrees. Are all cam lobes aligned in the same way to the bolt holes in the front??? Aidan
  15. Hi Followed the manual to check the alignment ov the sprockets- looks good to me...
  16. Just to advise, the head is not on yet, and I do have a gauge to find tdc I plan to do this bit very slowly following the works manual, and I just wanted to set it up so I'm not the 180 out in the first place. Aidan
  17. Ah, problem is its s new camshaft, well second hand new from a member here. It was previously used I believe so might still be marked Will add some pics tomorrow Thanks for the help I think my problem is I have too many manuals to work from!! Thanks Aidan
  18. Thanks, will check the red book As for alignment, as its the same crank, I'd assumed the same shims or lack of them in my case but I will check with a steel rule. Still a little confused how to avoid being 180 degrees out. I'm fitting ghe original marked sprockets so hoping to set the timing ok but any simple advice on avoiding the dreaded 180 out?? Tia Aidan Aidan
  19. Sorry Also how do I tighten these and to what torque please?
  20. Question Do I need to use sealant on the gasket between the front plate and block? Just about to return and bolt the plate Aidan
  21. Thanks Pete I will keep with the originals then, if only for the appropriate spacing! Aidan
  22. I've sourced a step by step rebuild from some backdated practical classics- it's on an SC engine and I know some of the torques mentioned will need double checking, but it's a good basis to work from Aidan
  23. Question on spring washers. Can I use the originals? Or do I need uo replace them all? If replacements, where is had best source and is there a set available?
