  1. Happy New year to you all !! I've taken some measurements but must be doing it wrong Iain I measured the diameter of the crank at the four bearing positions but results are odd compared to the range given by Pete above I took four readings for each Are you also saying I should be measuring the width?? Maybe I need to watch a utube on it Aidan
  2. Ha novice error I've pulled the Welch one.. oops but never mind! Are these the other 2 in the picture below - one large and one small?? Btw the four on the inlet/exhaust side don't have a ridge, is that usual? Ano question what's the best stuff to remove the old gasket material? Thx
  3. Yay I've removed 4 larger and 2 smaller plugs - needed a bit more of a pursuader That's all, but looking at the manual I seem to be missing 2 one of each size. Are there 2 in the back of the block? I wasn't sure if they were plugs or not.. Anyone have a pic? Manual isn't clear Thx
  4. Thanks Paul that's helpful I started in the middle! Will do better next time!!!
  5. Screwdriver in twist.. no chance, twist with screwdriver with spanner... bigger hole!!! I'm guessing these are originals and have never been replaced, or someone had put them in with loctite! Any other thoughts for removal???? Aidan
  6. Thanks Iain I will have a go today - I've seen they come as standard and then +10 etc IS this 10 thou of an inch? And what is the standard.to start with?? Thx Aidan
  7. Thanks Pete, I will have to double check but I'm sure the other one doesn't have those indents! Hmm Btw just to add I was able to lift the weight of the block but think it best to get an additional person to throw it in the boot!! Job for the new year
  8. Crank now out at last - so just a few final questions As above, short term what best to keep moisture off the block? What's the method to remove the dip stick pipe? Should I remove the core plugs? Re the pic of the exterior thrust washer - are the two indents usual? They were on the outside edge Remaining pictures Aidan
  9. Thanks Iain Here's another quick q, this morning the block was coated in condensation in the garage. It's not heated and moisture does arr8ve via the modern, so any solutions for this please? Thought of putting a bin bag over it but not sure that will work
  10. Well if I can't measure them, I'm getting closer to the decision to taking the block, crank and pistons to what seems on chatting to him a good machine shop in Newark. They have good experience of this type of work on classic engines and was recommended by the mechanic in the village Aidan
  11. Roger I do have a micrometer that measures to .01mm but what do I measure and what should the range be??
  12. Sorry Guys back to subject!!!!!!! Reading the manual it suggests it's a false economy not to change the main bearings They don't seem to be particularly expensive bit is this good advice? I can't see anything wrong with the current ones so far Thx Aidan
  13. Ok I can get two people to lift it. Probably easier than borrowing a hoist from the same person!! Cheers Aidan
  14. Do you think I could man handle it? or at least place it on a sack truck then lift it in to the hatch of my car? - otherwise I will have to borrow an engine hoist Aidan
  15. My Ctech 3.8 just went pop so now need a replacement. I know I know someone will mention Aldi and or lidl again but they sell them on the WTGTG middle isle so not much use to me What make are they??? Thx
  16. They are all in this condition. The stuff inside each isn't oil as it doesn't pour, but may be sludgy oil?? Either that or Po stuck some grease in there. I will dig some out and investigate further
  17. Do you mean up he sidd of the follower? There definitely isnt any on any of mine, all just tubes. Anyway pistons all out so just the main bearings and crank! I'm really surprised as a novice how hollow the block actually is. When everything is out or off, how much does it weigh????
  18. Thanks Pete Its good to know that I could take this and followers off the shopping list if it gets too hairy! I do have an overall budget in mind so if it's way over, my cam with all its foyables will go back in Anyway lobe no8 is the issue and here is the followers arse! Btw is it grease inside each of the followers??
  19. Your spot on, rarely drive the car hard I would say I'm a keep it below 3k range in general but wouldn't mind a bit extra pep to get to 70 mph I have overdrive to cruise. One of the reasons buying this engine was that the cam was said to be the best std one, so apart from the fact it's knackered and I'm now not 100% sure I have the engine with that supposed cam, that's where I'd like to get to Aidan
  20. I believe my engine is the earlier mk2, with the better stick cam it how can I be sure? Was their an engine number range? Ok- answered my own question- the part is a 308778. Is that the better of the 2 mk2 cams? What's the best replacement per Rogers requirement as that's what I'm looking for ?? Thx
  21. Thanks The ph1 looks to be my best bet for new then but will give them a call - i guess mine's for the bin as it's at the top of the lobe? Am unexpected cost but hey no such is life
  22. It's really odd, I took all the followers out in order, and gave them a clean on the outside. I will check tomorrow that specific follower but they all looked in really good condition with smooth bums!! Is it possible the engines PO just fitted followers to an old cam?? Does a re- grind involve adding metal back and grinding back to the std profile?? Aidan Looks like new it will have to be esp re angelfires other comment.
  23. Won't s re-grind change the profile? I just want a std cam, nothing special so what's the best budget route? Afraid I can't open your link Angelfire Thx
