As always great advice - thanks all.

One other quick point - any thoughts on skimming the head while it’s off the car? I’ve heard the 1500 can be a bit bottom end weak so maybe this isn’t worth doing?

    Pete

Skim head , if warped or you want it to look clean! Slight increase in compression ratio. Thought the longer stroke affected bore ware more than bottom end. I rebuilt a 1500 engine and did 20k hard miles in it and it was still fine. Had skim on head and ported myself, ran on mobile 1 when it was 5w40 no problems till they changed it to 0w40 then the oil light would flicker at tick over . Changed to a 10w40 full synthetic. Payen gasket set, did not think they were expensive, never had a problem with them.

Are those hoses round the right way? I would have thought the rh one was coming from the tank and the lh going off to carbs but the arrow on the top cover shows the opposite and indicates the inlet leading to the gauze filter...

So find out when trying to start!

Great news :( Mathew, Where/how did you target the gas axe, I thought they were used for cutting metal?

Do you never sleep ;) ?

Sleeping for wimps, and it will get me the sack more than being on my phone! Gas axes are very good for quick heating of parts, breaking rust lock ect. Again at one of my previous works! I only work 5 months of the year! The wonder of four on four off nights.

I have the mortal remains of a 1971 Herald Estate that was sold New in Jersey. Was moved to the mainland in 1980/1 and was registered on a W plate, which I was told was normal at th time.

Did not get age-related until a few years later.

I have had a few cars with newer plates due to being abroad.

A Rover 2600 engine transplanted into a Triumph seems rather appropriate, as this 6 cylinder OHC design was intended to replace the OHV sixes in Triumph's big saloons. That plan was of course cancelled when the BL's Rover Triumph division decided to rationalise and build the Rover SD1 as their only large passenger car, withdrawing the big Triumph saloons and estates.

Again shrinking the market for competitors to move in.

    1) I put the wheel & an old piece of steel into a plastic tub with a weak caustic soda/water solution.

    2) Connected negative lead of battery charger to wheel & positive to the steel (make sure it doesn't touch the wheel) & set charger to a low current.

    3) Remember to do it somewhere well ventilated as the bubbles you see are hydrogen & oxygen 💥

    4)Leave for some time (days)

    5) Check occasionally to see how it's doing

Result, less rust on wheel (possibly none of you leave it long enough), stuff that looks sort of rusty on the piece of steel & in the bottom of the tub

Same, battery chargers are really good as mine and most have safety built in to stop if it draws too much or dead short.
