  1. Hi all,

When heading across to the Silverstone Classic last weekend I looked down and was horrified to see the temperature guage reading just below the red (car usually runs mid point on the gauge). I pulled over and nothing appeared to be amiss - hoses all at usual temperatures - so I gave the thermostat housing a couple of sharp taps to ensure the thermostat wasn't sticking: no change in reading. I then drove a bit further, with the car seemingly running normally, before stopping to check under the bonnet again. After a quick wiggle of the sender connection the gauge dropped to zero, where despite further wiggling it stayed for the remainder of the journey to Silverstone. Later on in the afternoon before the parade lap I wiggled the connection again and the temperature gauge read perfectly normally for the parade lap and journey home... Sorted, or so I thought, but clearly a dodgy connection to keep an eye on.

I took the car to an evening show on Tuesday and on the journey out the car read normal temperature, but on the way home higher than normal, so I decided to buy a new sender. Fitted that this morning (before the rain) and took the car for a run - the temperature started climbing more quickly than usual and within half a mile was off the top of the gauge! Under the bonnet all the temperatures seem completely normal. Rubbish parts? I did buy from an eBay seller, so have another sender on order from Canleys, but any thoughts as to what else could be wrong? Fuel gauge is working fine, so voltage stabiliser should be okay. I replaced the thermostat a few months ago and the engine temperatures seem to be fine and consistent - warms up, thermostat opens, radiator gets hot, all other hoses warm up - whatever the temperature gauge says!

    Thanks,

  2. Cant see any oil on track hows the gearbox ???

    still holding up

    pete

Gearbox is still holding its oil, thanks Pete! I wasn't black flagged . Not even a slippery surface flag followed my passing, although after a fleet of Triumphs being on track shortly before the rain arrived, I'm not surprised the A30/A35's were skating off all over the place!

  3. A great picture; really sharp and catches the atmosphere. One to be framed perhaps?

I'm thinking of a canvas print - it's my birthday in a fortnight and after all the 'presents' I've bought the car this year I reckon I deserve one myself!

  4. Many thanks to all involved in organising the Club's presence at the Silverstone Classics at the weekend - it was great to see the array of colourful Triumphs sandwiched between the corporate greys and silvers of the Aston Martin and Maserati stands! The TSSC stand was really well supported on Friday and particularly Saturday, with many (like me) attracted by the opportunity for a Saturday parade lap. (I didn't make Sunday, so can't comment on number of cars).

This year's lap was, I felt, much better than last year's - a great holding area next to the track at Brooklands so we didn't miss any racing and a much quicker pace. Big thanks to Jane Rowley who forwarded the following picture to me today (credit Richard Dredge) - a fabulous memento ????

  5. There are different size clips available, but both inner and outer weather seals on my GT6 are held in place with black sealer (done by previous owner, not me). However, the reason is obvious - when the doors were re-skinned the new skins have too deep a lip and protrude well below the bottom of the weather strips, so no clips were ever going to reach! The driver's side seals have never come adrift, but the passenger side outside seal did at the lock end, until a small self-tapper cured it...

  6. Doug,

The number plate is indeed hanging off the bottom of the front bumper which is where it was when I bought the car. I know I should move it to improve air-flow to the radiator but don't know the best place to move it to. I've seen some plates hung off the bottom of the front spoiler but I worry about ground clearance. Where is your plate attached?

My number plate was also hung from the bumper - moving it downwards made a real difference to cooling. I've attached a photo which indicates its position. I used four L shaped furniture corner brackets in pairs to form extended U shapes with the inside verticals going through the grille above the valance and returned behind the chassis rail where there are some useful unused holes. The front verticals hold a horizontal bar to which the plate is attached. Took me about an hour to do using bits I had in the shed!

  7. I fitted an aluminium radiator cowl a couple of years ago and did notice an immediate improvement in cooling efficiency over having no cowl at all - no more higer temperatures on the motorway than A / B roads was the most noticeable difference. I cut two holes in mine for the air box feeds - no such elegant connectors though: I held mine in place with zip ties!

Mine also came with 3 fixing holes, but as I don't run the valences the top holes had nothing to connect to and the cowl was a bit loose. I made up some brackets from lengths of aluminium angle and fitted them to the back of the two lower bolts on the back side of the radiator bracket to the cowl and attached the top holes to those, resulting in a solid fixing.

  8. Thoroughly enjoyed the blog - thank you for taking the time to write up your experiences!

Sorry to learn your Disneyland Paris day didn't live up to expectations. Just bad timing I guess, as when we went in August last year the park was very quiet and characters were all over the place - our visit coincided with the Parisienne holiday period.

Not sure my wife would be able to pack light enough for a couple of weeks away in the GT6 - I suppose I might get away with going by myself...

    Thanks,

  9. I replaced the indicator switch on the GT6 earlier this year. Worked absolutely fine for a month or so, then stopped cancelling in one direction on a hot day - switch moved enough to break the electrical contact, but not click 'home'. When I removed the cowling, I found the pins that hold the cancelling tangs (joined by the small spring) had worked loose from the plastic housing, so the tangs were able to move in more than one plane. Two small blobs of glue and all good again.

  10. When filling from empty, how much fluid did the system take? Filled mine twice over the weekend (first time with water for a flush) and it took around 6.8 litres each time. I guess we all have slightly different radiators these days so capacities will vary, but usually upwards from the manual figures - if less, then you probably have air locks. Hope it's nothing more serious.

Another thought - does your block drain tap run okay? If not, that may indicate some build-up of crud (technical term!) that could affect cooling.

  11. My GT6 came with chestnut carpets but it's a late one,  maybe they were a late offering? Chestnut is quite rare and proving a pain to replace.

As to the Spitfire, Unless you're a stickler for originality, go for the red carpets, it will look spectacular.

The first GT6 I looked at was a white Mk2 with red interior (including carpets) - it was stunning, but sadly beyond my budget. I still wish on occasions that I'd found the extra £k's...

  12. Gully, bend the wire. You know you want to!

It pretty much hangs straight down, otherwise I would! :-) More to the point, when it says 1/4 full, it is... If I bent it downwards, it would still say 1/4 full, but be empty.
