  1. Hello I have a 13/60 herald with the standard black vinyl seats and unfortunately over the weekend I have ripped three small holes in my drivers seat. Does anyone have any suggestions how and who would repair this. I live in Derby so if anyone can recommend a mobile repair service I would be most grateful Regards Andrew
  2. Hello to you both Thanks for this from your information I have a non ballast resisted system so this week I am of to the club to buy me a coil (for the car not for me) Wow I love this forum for the help we all get Thanks once again Andrew
  3. Hello to all I need to purchase a new ignition coil which I will purchase from the club shop as I believe in supporting the shop whenever I can. Can someone explain the difference between a ballast resister ignition/coil and a system without. Regards Andrew
  4. Hello all Been doing some homework on electronic versus points ignition and I am going to treat myself to a good quality electronic ignition and the only place I will buy it from is the club shop as I can be assured of good quality and good advise from Garth Regards Andrew
  5. Hello Darren I have just spent six weeks trying to get my herald running right, changed averything I could think off then the Saturday just gone my wife was out so I had a tinker with my car removed the cheap electronic ignition replaced the points and condenser thought this won't now start and fired up first time ran like a dream idled at the correct speed no misfire more power and even my wife when she came back could tell the whole thing was sweeter. So the answer to your question I will never look at an electronic version again let's face it these cars were designed for points and that is the way mine will stay. Hope that help you. Regards Andrew
  6. Hello all I have cracked it. Let me tell you more. All the rough running, back firing, car not starting issues . Well the last ditch attempt was on Saturday. I removed the cheap electronic ignition ( not sure I should mention the make just in case someone is going to sue me for libel) installed new points and condenser made sure all the plugs leads were pointing to right plug started the car and it has now done 50 miles over the weekend not one single missed beat and it idles bang on, the engine does not even rock on the mountings. So if anyone asked me about electronic ignition I will tell them of my tale of woe. Does anyone else mistrust this electronic ignition question? And is there a 100% reliable electronic system on the market Thanks to everyone who helped me. Regards Andrew
  7. Good thought Pete but I have electronic ignition so no condenser it is now a process of elimination when I have my carb back and it still will not go I am going to replace my ignition system and go back to points as have a refurbished distributor which I have never used. What are you thoughts on points versus electronic ignition. Andrew
  8. Hi Peter. My suspicions are all pointing to the carb. My plugs are all firing but when removed all are very black. Started the car yesterday and it just gave lots of loud backfires and horrendous black grey exhaust. I have sent the carb off for a overhaul to a specialist so when it gets back and I fit it I will let you know. Funny thought it was fine until I had my cylinder head changed I suppose the carb was dislodged so any dirt in the system might have found its way in to the jet. Any way thanks for your help you did put me on the right path I will keep you posted Regards Andrew
  9. Hello Triumph herald 13/60 1971 I have now officially run out of ideas. Do I take it to a garage or if anyone out there wants to come to me and have a look I am in Derby Regards Andrew
  10. Hello OK let me try to explain. Originally my car was overheating, changed head as that was the suspect problem all ok now have done about 100 miles with no problem. When first starting the engine it ran rough for approx 5 miles and I suspected it was just cold. Got warm and ran well. Stopped the car for 20 minutes and it started to run rough again. Now cannot get the engine to fire at all. I have taken each spark plug out and held against engine block and their is a spark on all four. fuel is also getting through but I am a little concerned that plug four is wet with fuel and the other three are dry and very black which I am told is to rich a moisture. I have followed the instructions in the Haynes manual re mixture setting on the carb IE three turns down on the brass adjuster under the carb from a level with the piston base. One thing I have noticed when I try to start the car if it does fire and my foot is flat on the floor on the accelerator it will not pick up revs. Have taken all plugs out cleaned and tried again nut no luck. Please any suggestions would be welcome Regards Andrew
  11. Hi Richard Yes took my old head back to Canley's for a refund on the old unit. Got to say I like Canley's service. Andrew
  12. Hello Andrew here thought you would all like an update of my high pressure water problem. Bought a replacement head from Canley classics as I was taking the head of anyway. Found one of the waterways blocked up it could be cleared so perhaps the new head was a bid of an extravagance but you never know before you start the job. Anyway new hard fitted new gaskets fitted and new thermostat fitted. Long road test about 25 miles and all is well no presure in the hosed and the temp gauge is reading smack in the middle. I was dubious when refitting the head as I could not believe one blocked waterway can cause this problem. Hope this information is helpful to anyone.
  13. Hi Richard Bought some 25 amp wire from my local motor parts shop in various colours to suit the original colours all wired up and new solenoid switch mounted in dashboard it the proper place. Pity the steering lock version is not available from anywhere . Am I right in saying that it was only the last heralds that had a steering lock. Anyway all wired up now I need to sort out the water problem pressurising the system Thanks for your help and advise Regards Andrew
  14. Hi Richard Thanks for this I will do as you suggest. I will let you know as I intend to do the rewiring this weekend Regards Andrew
  15. Hello I have bought a new key ignition switch and I want to move it to the original position on the dash. (someone has put an old one on the wrong place) my question is what size wiring do I need, is all the wiring on a Triumph Heralds all the same size or are the ignition wires thicker than normal for the lights etc
  16. Hi guys Thank you for your help I now have a plan. I am going to remove the head replace head gasket and if head is not good purchase one from Canleys as you suggest I will also get new nuts and washers and a by pass tube if required. I will post on here when complete or half way through the job when I need some inspiration one again thanks. PS I thought owning a classic was going to be good for me and keep me calm Andrew
  17. Hi Richard Yes the temperature gauge does rise rapidly from cold which surprises me for a cast iron engine and then settles at the hot side of normal do you think I should remove the thermostat. Also my petrol gauge reads incorrect I ran out of fuel when the gauge still showed quarter full. I will run the engine as you suggest to see what happens to see if bubbles show. Would you suggest that when I remove the head to replace the gasket I change the head for an unleaded one Regards Andrew
  18. Hello I have very hard hoses that I cannot squeeze after a run in my herald and water being blown out of the radiator ever flow pipe. My question is the high pressure problem pointing to a head gasket issue or could it be a bigger problem with head or block. Any suggestion would be welcome
  19. Hello My Herald has developed big end trouble can anyone recommend a garage to remove my engine and rectify the issue I live in the midlands near Derby Look forward to any advice
