spitfire 1976 1500, non vented fuel float chambers conversion to vented ???

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

last year I had foreign body in the carburettor fuel float chamber valve making it stay open.  This resulted in fuel escaping from the top of the chamber right where the exhaust is (not ideal).  I see that later cars had a vented chamber, I presume for this very reason ???  So can mine be converted to vented ? Do I need new chamber lids ?  Are the vents just open or is there some sort of vinternal valve ?? And finally has anyone done this before ??  Thanks very much for your help.IMG_4326.jpg.13ec5f2ccfd5c9910a79a92f8bc68de1.jpgIMG_4327.jpg.3fe1f8da90a1ff3e55450f1ccaea8f10.jpgIMG_4328.jpg.6345d01307ec209387df33f7f16fe5dc.jpgIMG_4329.jpg.7a626766bda069b87c1d556f4ad23768.jpg

My daughters 66 Mk2 Spit has a small vent hole incorporated in the Bowl Lid one of the carbs is covered with a removable clip to stop ingress of dirt which any vented fuel bypass's, the others missing. Maybe similar is incorporated in yours and could be enlarged to take a small 1/4in copper pipe to deflect leaking fuel away.

My Dolly Sprint some 10 years younger had proper vented pipes which were I think piped to the carbon canister,

See attached photo of the vent hole
