Water in cylinder

I've been getting water in number 1 cylinder. Had a misfire and noticed when I took the plugs out. I've just taken the head off and can't see anything obvious. Head and block faces look good, no damage to head gasket. I've a new head set (Payen's ) on order. Is there anything else I should check. What about cracks? I checked cylinder pressures and they were all equal and good.

from  distant  memory there can be a leak from manifold studs that penetrate the water jacket

and the other is perforated manifold heating tubes

having had serious  problems with a payen (not payen these days  many names over the door)  i would never use them again

yes this was a recess block 6 pot  but payen is not what it used to be ( just search the net its awful)

did you check the head  nut torque before removal ???

I did wonder about the heated manifold, but pressurising with the garden hose It seems OK. I didn't check the torques, all the nuts were tight to undo. I though I'd get Payens gaskets as at least they are named unlike some.

When I owned a 1500 FWD, spark plugs began splitting the ceramic around the electrodes. Then, I noticed cream around the oil filler cap. All of the cylinder head studs were very slack. This was around 90,000 miles.

I stripped and rebuilt the engine because all of the internals were covered in creamy sludge, no more water or oil problems. However, it only lasted another 30k before bottom end noises made me replace it with an 1850 Dolomite.
