Joachim Moeller
Hi all, while restoring the SUs for my Spitfire Mk3 I came across the carb spacers. The problem is that the old gaskets have baked onto the spacers and they don't separate. What's the recommended way to get the old gaskets off? (Scrapping? Soaking?) Thanks for the help. Cheers Joachim
Pete Lewis
fine wet and dry with a little oil or water and face off on a flat surface should remove and clean up the gasket face
Joachim Moeller
Hi Pete, thanks, as I understand the old spacers are made of asbestos. Will the wet and dry take off some material off the spacer should I get carried away and go beyond the gasket? Is there a potential heatlth issue (beside the regular health issues I have when i work on the cars...) Cheers Joachim
Pete Lewis
Guess thats a problem but if you can flat it back to a smooth surface without breaking into the base it will, seal ok on new gaskets No expert on Hand S issues but the orig will be a bonded with some medium so unless you release the fibres its probably ok now I have visions of you inside a plastic bag fighting it to a standstill.... no bubbles allowed I think just be careful or we wouldnt do anything

dougbgt6
Been there, strange place. There was a remake 5/6 years a go, the village moved to an American desert! It has to be in Portmeirion!
Pete Lewis
we were there in June , still a pretty place away from the hassle of modern life bit pricey if you want to stay Pete
Joachim Moeller
I've been to Portmeirion a couple of years ago (walked there from Porthmadog) and I liked it very much. And yes , I even remember THE PRISONER (but haven't seen the remake). Cheers Joachim
dougbgt6
Don't think the remake got much critical acclaim! When I first went to Portmeirion the Prisoner was still very popular and the place was heaving with people. They let us in in shifts, someone had to come out before we could get in. Sounds a lot more civilized now.
