Speedo, oil leak, seal

Hello

My Vitesse 1600 MK1 is leaking from the speedo drive. Allow me a silly question:-)

Is it possible to renew the "19 SEAL SPEEDO PINION - J TYPE" only by removing the speedo drive and housing?

i would say yes  remove the angle drive and have a go 

its easy to remove the drive from the J type its just the one clamp bolt and withdraw it ,,you will loose some oil

You don't need to remove the housing; unscrew the speedo cable and you'll see the end of the drive; that seal just sits into the front face and can probably be pricked out with a needle.

However there is the large O-ring seal that goes right round the body and if oil is getting past that, you need to remove the drive itself.
