  1. I’ve pinged a note to David T at overdrive spares.
  2. Don’t bother @Mathew They have also ignored my email about the crap solenoid spanner. Won’t use them again. Stick to my tried and trusted.
  3. Got it apart after a bit of ‘robust’ tapping onto wooden bench. My rebuild kit (Paddicks) has the 2 outer seals but is lacking the three small piston seals (pictured). Anyone know where to get them please? Thanks
  4. Solenoid is off. Ground down spanner method. Connected it straight to battery. Silence. Doesn’t rattle when shaken either. Given the o/d works from cold It must be sticking/seals/dirt vs electrical failure. I’ll strip, clean, replace seals. Quite a bit of oil dribbling out without the solenoid in place. Better buy some more to top-up. Alan
  5. I second @Josef re giving Dave at Spit graveyard a shout for a starter. His stuff is properly tested. My car has one of his starters on £22.
  6. Hi Colin, it’s not bent, just not accurately made! There is a slot for a socket wrench to go into. I’d grind down a spanner if I were you!
  7. Yes, think I’m going to have to grind down a spanner.
  8. Realised it’s not bent. It’s just badly made. Too big at jaws end
  9. And the special tool has immediately bent! Compare with 1’ spanner!!!!!
  10. Right. Parts acquired. But questions…realised I didn’t take it off when the engine and box were out, just made sure it ‘clicked’ the upshot being it’s a bit stuck after 40 years. Q1: is it just the single big nut to undo? Or does the bolt underneath (also in the pic) need to come out as well? Q2: which way does the big nut release? Up or down from this position? Thanks
  11. Must be the threat of having to work because it’s Summer!
  12. ‘Work at dining table?’ Plainly @Pete Lewisyou don’t know my wife!
  13. If you ever get stuck again I found that mini ones are identical. All you need to do is bend the arm a bit as it’s at a tighter angle to the steering wheel. The best bit? About £30! Got mine from Mini Sport https://www.minisport.com/37h8285-steering-column-switch-mk3-early-lh-wiper-stalk-76-84.html
  14. Great result! Congratulations. And I’ll second the ‘get used to quick steering’ since I’ve also found the same vs modern car.
  15. Just found 2 examples of this problem on the Stag forum, both caused by half engaged solenoids that gradually let pressure build up. So sounds hopeful @Pete Lewis that the fiddling about underneath may not be required.
  16. May as well change the squeaky water pump as the car is in pieces again!
  17. Right…tunnel off, seals and spanner ordered (not so easy when it’s in the car is it!!)
  18. I bought these as the grease access is easy. Good quality https://www.angclassiccarparts.co.uk/?i=Search+Results&s=Universal+joint+spitfire
  19. Thanks. I took it off (when the engine was out during the car resto) and tested it worked…didn’t occur to me to change the o rings at the time. Hey ho.
  20. I hope you’re right @Pete Lewis Will be an easy fix . It’s sat in the drive cooling right now so I can use reverse!
  21. I’ve now disconnected the electrics and it’s definitely not electrical. Pressure is somehow building up and actuating the overdrive once the oil is warm. Suggests a leaking ‘o’ ring somewhere. I’m going to put it up on the ramps and take a look. Works beautifully when cold! Takes about 5 miles before problems arise. If it was a blocked valve I’d have expected issues from cold (thicker oil) not warm. What to start with first? Solenoid or drain down and base plate off?
  22. Agree. Leave the wheel bearings. But (based on my recent experience) driveshaft UJs that have stood for years dry out and then quickly ‘clink’ upon use. For a few £ I wish I’d done mine whilst the body was off. Much easier than sorting when back together.
  23. Not bad @Badwolf my first Spitfire melted no. 3 piston on the M5 at Wellington and I remember sitting in the AA truck thinking how much petrol we were saving!
  24. Hope you’ve done the UJs. Mine were fine until I drive it 10 miles…
