You are dead right Colin, the test system over here is a shambles, everything is down to the testers discretion!! How can they possibly know about all cars that are on the road? ( i know some people think they do) But it is impossible. Since it has been put on-line it has made things better, but i fear that we need to have VOSA test sites so that cowboy garages cant fail things just to get some work. How are the test centres policed in Ireland Colin? Are they private or goernment run?
Tony.
The principal function of MOT is to reduce accidents that are caused/worsened by the condition of the vehicle. The number of accidents in this category is minimal so it's the drivers and roads that need the attention but of course that's too difficult/expensive/unpopular. I've used the testing system in Spain which looks very similar to Ireland and driven miles to the nearest gov station and then waited literally hours in a queue. The price is also fixed as there's no competition so be careful what you wish for (and I believe is already on its way)....

Yes that's the original design clutch master cylinder sold by JP. Has a smaller reservoir than yours but running out of clutch fluid isn't as serious as on the brakes😳
-
There's already one spring on my throttle pedal and I've always meant to see if I can squeeze in a second one although now I've got used to the light standard set up....
-
I fitted an extra spring to my Vitesse carb operating arm because I found the existing set up too light for my heavy right foot but years later believe the side loading it gave has greatly accelerated the spindle wear on the rear carb😖
-
Nothing, however sometimes you don't notice the changes and it's useful to have a fresh pair of knowlegeable ears listen to catch bearing wear early before you need a crank regrind....
-
I would recommend listening to the engine though as at some stage, depending on the mileage you do, it will benefit from a bottom end refresh. Mine had big ends at 40k and then recently at 70k my brother heard my mains so it had those and a new oil pump fitted with engine in situ. Both times the shells were just going through to copper....

What convinces you it's not a pinhole leak in the tank? Very difficult to find as the fuel evaporates immediately and most likely at the bottom where water would have accumulated....
-
The PRV spring only changes the maximum pressure reached not the minimum. 50 is fine so enjoy😊

That's the title of the thread😂

Yes I'm sure sooner or later it's going to get nasty with a civil lawsuit against a driver or even the law makers because an insurance company refuses to pay out. In fact I can't believe how suspiciously quiet the insurers have been.....

I think the sliding joint bottoms out on the prop before the tip of the spline shaft. Certainly doesn't look like you'd get 15 mm without taking some off the outer slider as well and the you'd have to retap some thread but suppose that's easier than prop shortening.....

Canleys only list one flange for J types fitted to MK4 and 1500 Spitfires and it's 160286 same as sellers listing on eBay....
-
Don't fancy that coupling on eBay then Joe? It definitely looks shorter than yours but I don't know by how much.....
-
-
Have a look on eBay for 160286 flange. This is the part number for j type OD item but you would need to check with vendor that is actually shorter than what you already have.....
-
Thinking about it you could be right about the prop because presumably this box is as it came from a US GT6 so they must have used a shorter prop there. Also I assumed the flanges were interchangeable but with Triumph you can't assume anything so it sounds like you need quite a specific item. I still think there must be one somewhere though....
-
Havent got flange off original gearbox? Pity to shorten prop as it will be even more difficult to access the coupling bolts and short flanges are quite plentiful here. The number is from a US GT6 so looks good.....
-
Yes you're looking for a KF or WH followed by numbers but it could be over stamped with something else if its been reconditioned....
-
It should be a good gearbox as it incorporates almost all the improvements that Triumph made during the production of these cars👍
-
Please let us know if it works as these things are good to know🤓
-
No Joe, as Scrapman says you just need the shorter rear coupling flange to get a standard OD propshaft to fit. In fact you should be able to use the one off your non OD gearbox and it's an easy job which should make your new box 1" shorter.....
-
Sorry just reread your previous post and see that this box is 10cm longer than original non OD box which of course is perfectly possible. So yes that gearbox looks like it's going to be the same length as a standard Vitesse OD one....
-
Yes that's a J type OD but I can't understand why it's so much longer than the original box when normally you would expect no more than 1" difference compared to the standard D type gearbox. The serial number stamped on the top RH side of the cast iron gear case would be useful to know as well....
-
Definitely not a D type overdrive but pics of the box and prop would be useful

Depends how many stations they build but Spains a big country so the distance to the nearest one can be quite a way. They do have a prebook system now but over a month in advance as the on the spot demand is high and so of course you have to wait while any prebookers go through. The good?thing is that up to 10 years old it's 2 years and possibly a lot of miles between tests. I think Europe wants this system in the U.K. and of course guess who'll pay for all these new stations.....
