  1. Well, after a run out for drive it day I decided to check the lights given the previous issues, oddly when I flash main beam I get the side lights illuminating as well - off to study the wiring diagram again!
  2. Our herald estate is missing the bumpers, the rear valance is looking ropey (I have a new one ready to fit - winter job). I'm considering getting a full set of vitesse bumper trims and fitting that - just a clean up and polish. I'm assuming theyre a straight fit but would hide the crusty valance in the short term - self tapping screw straight into the valance. The other option is a 'new' rubber bumper set which would be 'correct' but I understand theyre hard to maintain
  3. First place I checked was the fuse - the fuse was ok but there was cracked insulation on the cable - that’s now repaired. investigated the column switch and switched dipped and main and it worked ok so the column switch appears ok, I then remade the Lucas connection under the dash, still not fixed. Then I did same to the connection under the bonnet - I think ideally that needs to be chopped out and remade but main beam now working (hence my suspicion of this joint. electrical gremlins are a pain!
  4. Just been to the herald for a quick check over before club night, main beam not working again, it worked fine when I parked it up, it’s stood for a week and it’s stopped again, the fuse hasn’t blown but no main beam! Dipped and side lights are fine, getting a little frustrating now as I don’t really know what to do to fix it, I’m suspecting there’s a damaged cable inside the cabin as the usual fix is a movement of the cable - I suppose the only option is to start chopping out sections and replacing - annoying as I want to use the car
  5. Wipac quadoptics , standard bulbs at present and relays to fit next but the improvement was very noticeable.
  6. Fixed the flash last week or so I thought, fuse blown again, also main beam didn’t work. Messed with the loom and lights back on but not sure why, I’ll check and clean each connector but don’t know why the fuse blows - guessing it’s earthing somewhere along the cable run. Well, after a drive in the dark, the new headlights are a vast improvement but now main beam doesnt work at all - thats tomorrows job to try and fix.
  7. I’d set the brakes as described in that post and the brakes felt good, it changed when I fitted the hand brake (I wonder if I haven’t adjusted the cable correctly)
  8. Ive been tinkering with the herald and that’s sparked my enthusiasm to get the vitesse running again, got the car running, now need to reset the handbrake as I think it’s binding on the near side (the wheel was getting warm last time I test drove it) Am I correct in thinking that it’s best to disconnect the handbrake, adjust the brakes and then refit the hand brake and adjust - what’s the best way of doing this as the wheels need to be vertical. Is it a case of putting the car on a set of ramps?
  9. NonMember - superb thanks that’s part sorted it, it’s the sidelights that flash not the headlight but at least progress made
  10. I’ve been working on the herald chasing electrical gremlins in the lighting circuits, most now work but not the headlight flash. The headlight operates as it should and main beam also works but it won’t operate when you pull the lever towards the steering wheel, any idea what to check?

    Air filter box

yes its the filter box connection, theres about 10mm left of the connection pipe but its flimsey and in fairly poor nick, like the idea of the washer as a bit of reinforcement
  12. Decided to give the air filter box a tidy up, the breather pipe connector is in poor condition and needs replacing, my idea is to get a length of steel or alloy tube and fix in place with jb weld - has anyone got a better suggestion
  13. Thanks all, I was hoping there was a simple solution which there clearly isn’t so I will give the gearbox a miss and keep looking for another one
  14. I’ve got the opportunity of purchasing an overdrive gearbox locally, it’s a d type overdrive box from a vitesse - could this be used on a 13/60 estate? If so what modifications are required.

Managed to get one of the rear side window seals (now just need to find right hand side). Still trying to workout why the dash interior light doesn’t illuminate when the door is opened - I’m suspecting it’s a wiring issue on the door switch. Also I was checking the tyres - they are legal tread wise but I can’t find a date of manufacture on the rears so I’m assuming very old (no cracking or the like) but I’ll sort a pair out. Is the recommendation still to use Ngk bp6es? Is it worth adding an expansion bottle to the cooling system or just remember to top up the radiator periodically? I’ve noted the level is stable but I’m going to swap the coolant so I know the age etc.

The carpet samples look good, just need to decide which looks best / most practical. I’ve been trying to sort the leak around the window seal, the seal isn’t properly fixed which I can sort but there’s a lot of movement on the glass, it’s like there’s no resistance between the inner and outer seal. Also when cross checking to the vitesse the outer seal on the vitesse is a mastic seal and the rubber seal is only on the main window, the passenger door on the herald is a rubber seal but it’s been trimmed around the quarter light. What’s the best way of sealing the doorframe inner apertures, I have tried dpm and tape which failed (I suspect as too much water is getting in) would a mastic be a better option than the tape? Or can anyone point me to a previous thread. Ideally the car needs to be weathertight as it’s being stored outside until a carport is built. The only other option is a cover but we live in quite an exposed location and I note the adverse comments on the forum to weather covers but note the club sell one that seems well regarded.

Thanks Colin, I have requested samples, with the darker colour the black seals would look better anyway. I’m tempted with the darker colour as the boot will be lined with matching carpet for the dogs.

Colin as you clocked it has a tan interior - i need to buy some new door seals as the footwell is damp (main leak was down side of window (no splash screen behind door card) also the carpet is due to be replaced, the carpet Im guessing should be brown, what colour should the door seals be (or do i have no choice but black)

washers now fixed (thanks for the part link Colin), now just need to give the car a quick service, our local europart lists a bosch oil filter gfe105, but it doesnt list an air filter option is there any alternatives to the gfe1015? If not i will have to see if Fitchett has them in stock when i call in next month.

started to clean up various bits of the car when weather permits, cleaned the wing mirrors that came with the car - can anyone recommend a supplier for rubber washers there for a 16mm bolt. Also need new rubber washers for various bits around the engine bay (eg air filter box). Ive found nylon washers but theres no flex in them.
  21. It may have been me and yes it’s the seals I’m after, the previous owner used the old seals and sealant. Just keeping my fingers crossed something turns up.

Just been working on the herald, going through my list of bits to sort, but mainly trying to get the windscreen washers to work, there is water getting through, but having checked in the washer bottle the end is missing - should this end have a non return valve? If so did I read a post on the forum about a cheaper alternative? Or am is just better cutting my losses and installing an ebay sourced washer bottle kit?https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/403259953844

Im going to try Patricks suggestion to repair the light to start with, it may well produce the desired result. We took the car out today, theres one or two clunks and bangs to investigate. My immediate items to fix are:- windscreen washers - barely work so Im tempted to fit a modern washer bottle and pump. the radiator has a small seeping leak on the top connection - can this be fixed with JB Weld or am i best getting it properly fixed? mirrors - a simple refit but need some new washers reversing light headlights - its running a dynamo - does this stop me fitting a halogen conversion ( I will install relays first) i need to move (or remove) the radio as i keep hitting it when i put it in first gear a repaint of the bulk head, there is a bit of rust but generally ok, just looks poor - need to find a paint supplier local but it was great to be out in the car today - lots of interest as we drove through the village

Colin that’s the type I had found by checking on google etc but when I checked Mike Costigan book it shows the same type as fitted to the car.

Not measured very well but I reckon 1.3m long, 1m wide x 0.6m to roof. Fairly practical for it’s day.
