    rocker adjustments

I want to check / adjust the inlet and exhaust valve settings. I believe the car has a piper cam 2397 fitted. Am I correct in think that rocker 1,3,5,7, 9 and 11 (inlet) should be gapped to 12 thou and all even rockers should be gapped to 14 thou. Ive checked the settings currently and theyre all more like 10 thou. TRIUMPH 6 CYL 2397 @ 110.pdf

    Fuel tank

The weather was ok today so I thought I’d start replacing the fuel pipe, check the carb float chambers and the fuel pump. Removed quite a bit of crud from the fuel pump, the float chambers were clean and replaced a couple of pieces of rubber fuel pipe. One piece was fine just wrong grade however the other piece was bad. I need to check the other bits now!

    Car purchase prices

The car is a bit rustier than the photos suggest but seems fairly genuine, good mot history etc but I couldn’t get to an acceptable price. I’d have gone to 2.5k but that was my limit. I will continue the search!

    Borescope

Thanks, I will do some more research, I’m thinking a unit with monitor maybe better.

    Borescope

Can anyone recommend a cheap borescope for iPad as most seem to be Android ? I’m thinking it’d be useful for seeing into those hard to reach places - my gearbox still has a odd drip from somewhere, with a borescope I could in theory look at the gearbox from the oil filler hatch in the tunnel in the vain hope of spotting the leak. I could also see inside the petrol tank without messing with the sender unit etc.

    Car purchase prices

Is it advertised anywhere? The one in Cornwall is local and the advert comes across honest and hes answered my queries - Ive had a quote for a new hood (I will never fit one myself again!) but Im unsure that the chap will lower the price to a more realistic value, there have been a few on ebay struggle to get to 3k and they look better in the photos.

    LIDL/ALDI TOOLS

Two lidls visited to try and get the battery impact wrench - none in stock but plenty of the mains powered ones. Thought Id see what was available on eBay and it seems the lidl wrench is being resold at nearly £100 each. Ill wait till next time.

I’d guessed at A2 and then I struggled with the price. Thanks for the pointers on value.

    Car purchase prices

I thought it looked fairly original, the hood needs replacing and in my mind that comes of the asking price, I’m planning to go and see it at the weekend but then I started scanning eBay etc to see what current prices are and that really throws up doubts on values, they’re all over the place.

    Car purchase prices

Thanks that was my initial thought, but then others made me realise that prices vary considerably. Im trying to do my research before I go and see the car.

  12. Im thinking of buying a second triumph, a spitfire for every day use, it will also be the car my wife would drive (the vitesse is too heavy). The car will live outside so it gets used. Ive seen a car advertised on ebay, its local to me so I am going to look at it over the weekend. Ive been checking what the prices are like as the vender is asking £3500, its a MkIV 1300, MOT history looks good but the car needs some tidying. Gut feeling Id say the car is A2 which means against the TSSC agreed value schedule its too much, however asking prices seem to vary wildly. Any advice on where to get a reliable guide. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Valencia-Blue-1971-Triumph-Spitfire-1300/183962691431?hash=item2ad507e767:g:H6QAAOSwReJdg5S5
  13. John, yes can see the pic, I intend to copy that as I had the jack start to slide in the vitesse
  14. I’ve just emailed them and will post their comments - I’m hoping it is totally compatible.
  15. I need to apply some waxoyl or similar wax and under seal / Shultz as per a previous post, the S50 was recommended and the reviews are good, my concern is the car has been treated in the past with various treatments (largely unknown by POS), are they all compatible or do you run the risk of a reaction between the various products
  16. Dave thanks for that photo, thats a similar setup to what I had on my GT6, so in theory I can connect the carbs to the ocker box as the photo. and then the servo off the manifold?
  17. The engine has a blanking plate currently fitted, however the car is fitted with Su carbs with a very odd breather set up, my plan is to vent the carbs into the rocker box as per a spitfire, use the crankcase breather from a triumph 2000, and remove the smiths valve arrangement. The manifold take off will then feed the brake servo. And as a final adjustment I will revert to a near standard air box setup (I’ve got an air box that will fit on the su’s)
  18. I’m fitting it on a 2l early Mark 1
  19. I’ve just fitted a new tunnel, I got it from Nigel Hook on tssc Facebook site, it fitted really easily, has an access hatch for oil topups, and the gear lever hole came precut and the gaiter was one of the easiest I’ve ever fitted, far better than the grp stuff I fitted in the past. Heat insulation wise I got some foil faced mat, self adhesive and fully insulated the inside of the tunnel, all joint were then taped with aluminium tape.
  20. I'm in the process of reinstating the engine block breather pipe - I need to locate a couple of gaskets (124954), a baffle (128870) and the mesh wire infill (129101), I assume that these parts are long out of stock, the gaskets I will make using gasket paper, the mesh infill is a coarse wire wool, any ideas on the baffle plate - I am thinking about making one out of a thin plate (copper or aluminum) and drilling a series of 1mm holes. Another idea is to use something like:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30-Mesh-304-Stainless-Steel-Woven-Wire-Cloth-Screen-Filtration-Filter-5-9x11-8/233289109162?_trkparms=aid%3D1110001%26algo%3DSPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D40732%26meid%3D4113251464b8478a895de27247bf9da4%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D303132774901%26itm%3D233289109162%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851 This would then be bedded in a hylomar or similar sealant and fixed to the block. Open to suggestions.
  21. I mainly wanted it for applying waxoyl, as an air duster, and inflating tyres etc. Maybe to drive a air ratchet and a small sand blast gun but that’s the lot. I tried waxoyl in a spray can - Very messy to use and the nozzle seemed to clog up within seconds and couldn’t get into the awkward places. Not having a compressor would suit me better in some ways as it’s less clutter in the garage! I did think about a waxoyl sprayer as that if it worked would solve my main requirement.
  22. Tony thanks for the comment - I did wonder given its price point. I’ll spend the money more wisely.
  23. Has anyone tried the Lidl compressor - it looks like a bargain, I had been thinking about a compressor from SGS engineering which is just shy of £110 at the moment.
  24. watsona6 theres a gt6 workshop manual on this site - the door lock / handle is the same as a mkiv and 1500 spitfire - this may give you an idea. http://vitessesteve.co.uk/

    Fuel tank

I popped the rubber cover off the sender unit - its the old screw fixings - I will order a new cork gasket before I remove the sender, however what sealant do I use with the gasket (its currently a red mastic)
