Looks good, where did you get the new shaft in the end Cliff
Fitchett's. Turned up about 9:30 this morning. Just a shame that the other stuff that I decided to replace at the same time hasn't come yet so I can't finish it 🤨

UJs on drive shafts are supposed to be tight. If the cups have gone in far enough to fit the circlips then you're unlikely to have dropped a needle
That's what I was thinking. It does move but tighter than I was expecting. I haven't changed one in over 40 years and couldn't remember if it's supposed to be like that.

Check that none of the needle rollers have dropped into the base of the cup.
Would I be able to get the circlips in if that was the case?

More questions.
Just fitted a new UJ into the yoke of the new shaft and it seems very tight to move. Is that to be expected?

You could hear it with the roof up or down. Jacking the wheel and rotating it by hand You could feel the grating.
As you will have seen, things have moved on now. The ball race is destroyed, most of the needle bearing has disappeared and the drive shaft is trashed.
Consequently, I am really surprised that there was so little noise. Could just about hear it with the hood up and not at all when down.
I'm glad I investigated further

I meant to say earlier, I found very little evidence of the needle bearing, about 6 needles in various places.
I assume the rest made a bid for freedom along with the grease 🤨

no the half inch is how far the needle bearing is pushed in so the seal goes in less...
I suspect it's fully in then.

The manual shows quite a bit of seal sticking out and itll only go in up to the shoulder in the housing....
Yes, it says the recess is 1/2" and the oil seal is 5/8" so it would prodtrude at least 1/8". This is slightly more than that. I will take another look tomorrow and see if it will seat any further.
Many thanks.

Looking at it Cliff are you sure about the grease trap positioning as it would be partially crushed if bolted between housing and backplate?
However as discussed the grease should come out of the shaft seal but as your bearing ran so hot a lot of grease had probably been lost and then it would take a lot more grease to refill the chamber...
When I removed the back plate the gasket, the grease trap & the cover came away stuck to the back of it and had to prised off with a screwdriver

well
so the grease trap was between backplate and bearing housing! Ha wouldnt have thought thats possible😂
Yes perhaps best to look at other side without delay....
Yes, and I want to see if that stopped it working properly. Certainly no grease came out of it when I was trying to put more in

I was going to say maybe a winter job and enjoy the summer but if the Persuader has to be returned I suppose its best to use it now.
However if you need a second shaft will it be easier to get the cost authorised by the 'accountant' by waiting a while😂
I divorced about 15 years ago and subsequently re-married, since when I have done my own "accountancy" 🙂

And another thing, I believe it was assembled incorrectly.
After the hub came off there was the back plate, then a gasket, then the grease trap followed by the seal housing.

Looks like its been there a long time?
It does look like an old wound and if so, it has obviously been fitted like that.
Wondering now if, once this is sorted, I should strip down the other side and inspect it 🤔

as a 1500 i guess you have the long shafts ????
did you know there are two lengths available ??? they do get mixed up
Yes, I asked for a long one and specified it was for a 1500 so hopefully will be correct. I will measure it up though lol

Thanks. These are actually £5 cheaper but they are on holiday until next week.

Ordered one from Fitchett's. Should have it tomorrow

Does the club shop do them?

I presume the needle bearing surface isn't acceptable either.
Looking at the bearing, I can't believe there was virtually no noise and I only found this through noticing the grease coming out and then the temp.

I had to get the yoke off the old drive shaft and had a bit of trouble shifting one of the caps on the old UJ
