Hello
You can fit a longer needle roller bearing if you leave the outer spacer out !
From memory it is 2 to 3m longer so runs on that bit at the end where you can see on yours no bearing runs!
I have done thousands of miles since doing it and I had to strip the gearbox this year for another problem but the bearing and shaft were fine.
Roger
Ps I will look up the size and number later
You could find a thead on the sideways forum

i’ve just bought some belts for a couple of projects from these guys:

The service was fantastic and prices were keen as well.
Hello All
I have used them often they are good and quick
Roger
ps but I always look on Fleabay for new old stock bearings of the Good makes and just regrease them with fresh grease after a wash out and you can pop the rubber type seals out easy and pop them back in if need or leave them out if needed!

Hello all
The Fitchetts ones are still going strong I will look later at how many mils they have done!
But we have done over 6000 miles this year! (Spain and Spa 6hours etc)

Hello All
If you have one made have 5/8"UNF to 20mm
The selection of filters is far greater and usually much cheaper as a lor of Moderns have 20mm
Roger
Hello All
I am talking rubbish again mine is 3/4"UNF and made of steel I use a W916/1 but a W714/2 is smaller
I get mine from Eurocarspares when they have a big discount and buy 3 for about £10 to £12
Here is the Man catalog I think they the best I would not touch the white box with just a number on the side with a barge pole!
I opened one of each up once and there was about 3 to 4 times more filter paper in the Man one!

Roger
ps but 20mm would still be ok as there are lots of them as well

Looking at the CDD kit its hard to see how anyone could be disappointed (except with the price!) as they seem to have covered every possible weakness of the original design: wider needle roller with inner race so no surface hardening needed, bigger ball race bearing, stronger shaft, keyway machining, bigger trunnion etc.
Hello All
I think a bit OTT unless you are racing or have a very powerful engine but then the diff would break!

Sorry, daft question again RG: Can you please explain the quote above a bit more in detail? The CDD kit comes with shafts & yokes if I understand their website correct. Did the yokes & shaft supplied from CDD fail when you assembled things (never driven) or did you drive the car and they came loose after X miles? I have never taken these things apart on neither my Herald nor my Vitesse, I have no idea how they fit together or should be assembled.
Hello Roger
The shafts I am talking about are the standard type.
Have a read of this thread.

Looks like the CDD uprated items should address the issues but at 1000+ pounds a pair😲
Hello All
After having 2 were the yoke came loose on replacements!
So I bought 2 from Fitchetts and they looked Very well made and the yokes looks as though they had been heat shrunk on and the splines were rolled not cut!
They have done about 10 to 15k now with no problems

Hello All
I thought I would do a final round up of the trip!
So we were away for 21 days thats counting the drive down and back(but all part of the trip in an old car!)
So all the poor pensioner on here with sheds full of old cars and motorcyles that have to watch the pennies?
The total cost was as near as dam it £3500 = £165 per day
The Ferry was £840 the rest was petrol, digs and food and of course Vino!
As I said before we averaged 49mpg and just over 1/2 litre oil over the 1900 miles.
We think that is pretty good considering all the places we went and things we saw!
Roger and The Memsahib
ps we have booked the ferry for about the same time slot next year we work on the fact that we could get half our money back if one of us falls really ill and then rest would not matter at that stage? (£336)
pps we have only paid £672 this time as they are offering discounts(must be struggeling the get bums on seats?) so we have saved £168!!!! and we can change the dates if we want!
ppps I saw this in Lugo never seen a plumbers shop laid out like that in UK? and underground carpark and lift in Lugo

Strange Jaquzi?. Good trip though, I liked driving through Spain, prefered it to France. Did you get to ride the new Ferries?. Big upgrade I am told from the Old Pont Avon?.
Pete
Hello Pete
No we went on the old one as it is cheaper and only 24 hours now! (they have cut 12 hours off the crossing!!!)
That leaves more money for the important things like vino and Tapas?
Plus I agree I like Spain and find the people much nicer than the Frence and they have a lot more good motoring roads!

Roger, looked a wonderful trip and glad you both enjoyed it.
You mentioned about running warm and I noticed the number plate was quite high blocking the radiator. May be worth moving down on your next trip.
Your pictures are very enjoyable with your comments.
Did you not do a similar trip a few years ago?
Thank you for sharing.
Graham
Hello Graham
Spitty is ok normally it was the 40degs that was killing us all!
Yes we have done several trips and have been reported on here
we are looking at booking next year as the ferry times are on line now and discounted !!!
If we can not go for any reason the money will not matter as we will be ill !
Roger
ps getting into a car lift 2 floors down

Hello All
We are back in Blighty now we have covered 1896 on the speedo and 1909 on Gladys the Satnav and used 38.89 galls of petrol
So that is 49.08 MPG or 48.75 MPG
Spittys oil is 1 mark down on the dip stick and I had put in just over 1/2 litre and it has been very very hot (40 deg C)
The crossing was a bit rough and it took nearly 2 hours to get off the ship and out Plymouth then a steady run up the A38 and M5 at a steady 70/75 MPH !
Photos last digs and San Vincente and 4 mast sailing ship
Roger and the Memsahib
ps I hope you have enjoyed the report?
pps It is a pity I can not see how many views it has had to gauge the interest?

Hello All
Last full day in Spain and back to Blighty on the 17.00 ferry tomorrow
We had a good drive up through the mountains and it was a lot cooler today so all 3 of us were happier!
We are now just outside San Vicente in a nice self catering 2 storey house.
We have covered 1650 miles from home and it is about 35 mile to Santander and 200 in Blighty
The first two photos are a view from last night’s room and breakfast room this morning
The last one view from today’s room

Hello All
We are now at a site close to Reinosa in a row of boxes overlooking the lake (better than it sounds)
We have come through the vineyards and over the mountains past the wind turbines and it has been TO HOT AGAIN!!
The owner here says it much hotter than normal we saw 35 degs sign but think at times closer to 40 degs!
Tomorrow we are off to the coast just outside Saint Vincent and back to Blighty on Monday afternoon sailing from Santander back in Blighty Tuesday afternoon!
Roger and the Memsahib
Ps we have covered 1530 miles from home and used 30.63 galls = 49.951028 MPG!!!!

Classic cars seem few and far between in Spain. I only saw one rather nice Renault 5 during our entire week in Andalucia in 2019 (Jerez, Cadiz, Seville, Sanlucar, Tarifa.)
Hello Mark
I was told by Rubin in Lugo when Spitty had driveshaft trouble the import duty on cars was Very high in Fracos day so you only see Mercs etc owned doctors etc
So the cheap Triumph were priced out for ordinary people.
Unless they were made/assembled in Spain

Hello All
Well this has been a different day
We are now just outside a little town called Cenicero for one night.
We were having a good cross country trip and it was getting hotter and hotter(38degs)
So we stopped at a nice small bar for Coffee and Sandwiches which were good.
An old Spanish man came in and was saying something about the car that we did not understand and we just thought he likes the car!
But when I went to start the car (have you guessed what I had done??)
Yes that is it we came through a tunnel earlier and I had put the lights but forgot to turn them off(Numpty No1)
So we went back into the bar and the Lady understood what had happened and phoned someone up (Maybe her husband) and within 10minutes he was there with jump leads and his old Volo.
I had given the lady some money for the phone call against her will!
I also gave the man 10 euros against his will and thanked him.
So as Willy Nelson said we were on the road again.
I am going to fit one of those simple buzzer circuits that stop you doing this!
Last photo view from room over the vineyard to the distant mountains and all is good in our world again

Hello All
We are now Javier(Xavier) having driven up the Somport pass (4790feet)
We could see remains of the railway line as we came down the Frog side.
We then climbed up the Col De La Pierre Saint Martin pass (5775feet)
Poor old Spitty got very hot under the collar and us! but the views were good.
It was a nice rundown the other side to Javier and the Hotel which is opposite the Castle
We think the temperature was 38 degs today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are going across country to just passed Logrono about 100 miles tomorrow.

Hello All (Wednesday)
We are now in Canfranc having stopped at the Station for refreshments and a look at the restoration work (must dig out a photo from last time we were here to compare!)
It was only a short run of about 65miles.
Spitty seems ok most of the time but still a bit lean at times in certain areas?
I have this theory it may bet the heat at times as has been in the mid Thirties and more most of the time!
When I put Spitty onto ITB’s I fitted the in tank pump in the near side of the tank and the old return goes down into the tank to near the bottom on the near side!
So I am thinking some times she is getting hot petrol when moving slow or after standing in the heat!
As the fuel cooler would not be doing much and it may not be in the best position to get cooling air?
Off up over the Pyrenees Tomorrow!
Roger and the Memsahib
Ps Anther nice Vino View (except the cars!)
