  1. Don't do what i have seen a number of times and use the feed to your 6v coil as the supply to the new electronic ignition, as suggested in the instructions, as they assume you have a 12v coil. You only get 6-8v.

That said, I saw a SimonBBC unit fitted to a 2.5S saloon, that had, due to the fact it had a much earlier engine fitted, and an electical novice as an owner, both a resistive wire and a ceramic ballast resistor, and teh unit was working (ok-ish) at the 4v it was being supplied.

  2.

I think the only other brand of piston you can get for our cars now are made by an Australian company called JP, they are worse quality still, so if you embarking on an engine rebuild, just be aware of what you're buying. I called all the usual suppliers and they all sell County sets. I'm not saying all the rings in all County pistons are poor, but there must be enough dodgy ones out there for him to feel he has to get alternatives made.

I am sure I was told that County Pistons are fitted with one make of rings, but if you buy a set of County rings they are from a different supplier (one from Israel or Switzerland??) and are of a much higher quality.

So you buy the pistons which are apparently a good quality, if slightly heavy, casting, and well matched on weights, discard the rings, and fit a set of the rings from the other supplier.

    Now whether that is correct.....

  3. I have had my Black and Decker 115mm one for almost 30 years now, still seems to be going strong, has helped rebuild at least half a dozen cars now.

Perhaps i am more gentle than other people.

I do occassionally borrow a 9inch grinder, for which I bought a 6inch cup brush for rapid rust removal. Only thing I think it wants to remove is parts of my anatomy, the gyroscopic effect of the cup brush is something to behold!

I will be keeping my eye out for a couple of cheap Aldi / Lidl ones so I can had multiple discs availabel when doing certain jobs. Just to save time and effort.

    Cheers

p.s. on the subject of appropriate PPE... I watch a mates dad cut up an old Herald with a petrol powered slab cutter wearing just a pair of shorts and a flip-flops. The things we did when younger....

  4. All Dolomites will be J-type, and as you are looking at an HL, it will be attached to a single rail box.

If the car is in excellent condition, that is worth far more in lack of grief than even fitting a rebuilt Overdrive will cost.

Negotiate a little bit off the price.

    Cheers

One of the traders used to do new bonnets for Mk1/2, not sure if they still do. Would possibly have been Chic Doig or TD Fitchetts. Will hurt, but also save all the pain of a rebuild. any 2nd hand one will be just as rotten as yours as the good ones are fitted to cars!

I may be able to assist with someone to rebuild your rotten bonnet, but depends how far gone.

The grills ISTR are the poop of the rocking horse.

  6. I had an FC with the brass plate now sold to a CT member to tune and fit to his Herald

The plate should also tell you bearing and bore sizes.

Chances 1450 was the original engine number

  7. Just noticed, at http://www.lemansclassic.com/language/en/grids/ 'coz I missed Kevin's post, that there is a SEVENTH grid this time.  Group C cars, from 1982-1993.

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

If there was one event that would make Bert Smeets get out the TR8 Turbo Le Mans, it's ..... Le Mans.

But until now the grids have stopped at 1979, so there has been no opening for him.

They allow a Seventh grid, and miss out 1980/81!

    It's a conspiracy I tell you!

    John

I wonder which grids they will cut to allow time fro the Group C cars?

Perhaps drop to 2 races per grid that are a bit longer?

Drop a race for just the older cars?

It might be worth trying one of the devices designed to be used with CANBUS type wiring in modern cars.

They sense a voltage but do not load a circuit and then trigger outputs fed from a 12v supply.

I am not recommending this specific one, but it should give you an idea.

Some of them also have a sqwarker in them to provide the additional tell-tale needed.

  9. Assuming that the guys at HQ manage to arrange the normal setup.

Additional portable shower block  / toilet block, giving about 10 showers and 10 toilets I think.

Communal area for members with televisions showing things...

Burger van (Sounds bad, it isn't, the guys who ran it the last 2 times work like dogs and the food is really good)

Security on gate to hopefully keep riff-raff out.

Own access gate into circuit (well one not really used by anyone else, but it could be)

Good viewing from the communal area.

Being inside the track it only take a few minutes and you are alongside the track or at the Dunlop Bridge.

    Cheers

  10. Is a "long" manifold a different manifold to the standard item? (I know little about TR's)

If it is akin to rocking horse poop, I would try someone like Tony Sheach who is a magnet for all things rare and interesting TR-wise. (I can assist with contact details, but not publically)

If it is a standard fit, then somewhere like TRGB should be able to assist.

    Cheers
