  1. A 74 sould have long shafts.

Worth checking it still does, it gives 2" more track at the rear than a short shaft car. Hopefully someone will come up with a measurement for you to check.

I asked as you mentioned the wheel looking like they don't fill the arches. It is very noticeable on a short shaft car.

    Cheers

As you have taken a fancy to 5.5J hubcap wheels, be prepared for the cost (perhaps best to sit down!), and also the fact that they are rarly ever straight.

4.5J Vitesse / Estate wheels are cheap option.

What size are the oval hole wheels you have??

    4.5J I suspect.

    Cheers

  3. The OIL spec says 20W50, Any recommendations or anything to avoid? Is it just a case of going for Castrol Classic? Looking at the various manuals one says 4.55L, another says 5.1L, I wonder if the lower is without a filter change?

I seem not to have a Fog light - I assume that is still needed to be added to pass an MOT despite its age ?

Try Valvoline VR1 20/50. Seems very good, Buy from Eurocarparts, especially when they are offering additional discount. Lots of the other cheapo ones are pretty poor quality now, degrade very badly very quickly. Other options are Millers Classic Sport 20/50 or they also do a 20/60.

You do not need a fog light, so remove it and any switch for it, makes life simpler.

  4. There are quite a few projects about, and people sometimes have unrealistic expectations as to what they are worth.

So they stary about. Eventually the price does drop a bit.

As to what to pay, how complete it is determins the price. Lots of parts are now very hard to get. Seats cost a lot to rebuild, assuming originals still fitted, which usually they are not.

You are probably better buying a road-worthy but tired one.

That said, I do know where there is a Mk1 project, and the owner is vulnerable at the moment as his marriage is breaking down, so may be available.

    Cheers

I suspect the clue maybe in the fact that you have found small o-rings.

Do you know the history of the engine??

I wonder if the car had an external feed at some point (properly, as in the passage in the headf was blocked with a grub screw), someone tried fitting o-rings to limit oil consumption, and then a later owner removed teh feed.

    Possible???

Fit a feed with a limiter.

  6. Round North London there is also Picton Sports Car at Cheshunt and Mordale Motors at Potters Bar if you need work doing on your car, or assistance.

The North London area folded a few years ago, most of us went to the Club Triumph meet at Crews Hill anyway, so we just kept going there.

  7. The Piranha / Newtronic ignitions are fairly easy to fix,. they are just a couple of transistors and discrete components.

If you are not up for fixing it (probably a dry joint) then leep your eye out for a replacement box, they come up on Ebay occasionally.

The Piranha is a far superior system to most of the modern ones.

p.s. do not throw it away, give me a shout if it need rehoming!!

  8. I suspect Garth does not stock Superflex 2000 bushes as he sources them from Chris Witor.

Garth does sell some Stag bushes though.......

  9. It is quite possible to get 2 6ft plus 18 stone blokes into a GT6.

I am sure at least of of them was 6ft4.

It did require one to push the other less flexible one in... :-)

Find yourself a local meet, or let us know where you are and there may be someone about who can let you try one for size.

  10. The clue is in the AM and PM.

    I found this explanation....

“AM” stands for the Latin phrase Ante Meridiem —which means “before noon”—and “PM” stands for Post Meridiem : “after noon.” Although digital clocks routinely label noon “12:00 PM” you should avoid this expression not only because it is incorrect, but because many people will imagine you are talking about midnight instead. The same goes for “12:00 AM.” Just say or write “noon” or “midnight” when you mean those precise times.

    Any teh wiser??Thought not

  11. Regardless of practicalities, isn't it wonderful to hear of brides asking for Dad's old Triumph (or anyone's similar type old car for that matter) rather than the default white limousine, usually a DS420, Beauford or (if you can afford it) a pre-war Rolls-Royce.  :)

(or if you don't know cars, being conned in thinking you have a pre-war Rolls-Royce....... it happens!)

Ripping the passenger front seat out of an open top Triumph could work reasonably well  B) Some do that with Beaufords.

It's all stretched Hummers round our way....

They do the brides by day... and the slappers by night.

  12. I know a number of people who have fitted the kit, and have not had any complaints.

You still retain the problem of shimming the rear bearings (it uses a 1500FWD CV joint).

The alternative is the Nick Jones / Josh Bowler setup,

That uses R100 driveshafts and the vertical link is machined to suit.

But sourcing the parts can be a problem now.

    Cheers
