Iain T
I've bought some toggle switches with an led light on the switch. They have three spades, I have two wires! To enable the led light to work do I need to piggy back off one of the spades! The two spades at the bottom are on/off (checked with avo).
johny
Ha just looking at these for my fan switch. The top terminal must be earthed for the LED to work then, when you switch on, the power goes out on the RH terminal and at the same time goes to the LED where it flows through it to earth👍If you get the power in/out mixed up the LED will be on all the time.... johny
Be interested to know how bright the LED is as need it to stop me leaving the fan running while driving (dont want a thermostat)!

Can I also get an audible "turn the bl***y fan off you idiot" message! Thanks for that Johny, plenty of earth possibilities around the dash. johny
ooh yes that'll do although I dont know what colour I'll get. And I will have it upside down as youve got it so that you flick it up to turn on the fan and the LED shines in your eyes👍
Iain T
One issue with having the earth spade on the side is the wires either dangle down or in my case don't fit as it hits the dash panel. I've fitted it so the switch works horizontally. However I will be changing for a similar switch with the three spades at the back as having all the connections facing forwards makes the cables tidier. johny
fitted my LED fan control switch (same as above) and have hit a small problem - as I drive along the spal fan rotates in the breeze and the voltage generated back feeds the LED so think its going to need the relay I was hoping to avoid🙁
Jeffds1360
Just as an aside, I had fun fitting some illuminated switches to my relay controlled accessories! Yes, they tell you the relay is powered up, but NOT if the accessory is on !!! ....you need a 2nd in line lamp to check power is flowing to the item. (Fog lamp, reversing light etc). Nightmare to do and a spiders web of wires
johny
Alright with the fan as Ive got a steam powered feed back loop to indicate if it isnt working🤣
Iain T
Johny, my toggle light doesn't come on. Perhaps it's because of my fan control? Iain
johny
either that or the fan isnt being force driven by the airflow?
JohnD
Yes, an electric motor is a generator is a motor etc etc. In the first cars that had an electric starter, it doubled as a generator too! Why do you need a relay? John
johny
well a relay would stop the LED being lit up by the freewheeling fan. I only wanted the LED switch to reming me to turn off the fan once moving fast enough but if its continually lit it rather defeats the object🙁
Iain T
I have a Davies Craig control for my Spal fan. The control has two relays as you can wire two fans. No idea if the relays could stop the feedback. Iain
johny
Yes your reverse supply, if produced, can only come back to the relay contacts which being open wont allow it past while mine comes back to the switch where, although open, it can still flow through the LED to earth... johny
ha, its down to the bloomin LEDs as a good old incandescent bulb wont light with a little back voltage but this modern technology is so efficient it only takes a few volts to get an annoying illumination!
