Have run my Vitesse with Halogen outers and the original sealed beam inners for years, main beam was always fine it was dip that was poor.

Think originally it was about 200W main and 75W dip.

Regards

Paul.

Most of my cars have used H4's. Both these and H1's are available from different manufacturers. Osram were owned by Phillips and made some for Halfords years ago. I found them much brighter than some of the cheaper ones, even at 55watts. Recently cahnged one on my 'Modern' and can now see after dark. They do dim with age. Must be human.

When we brought my daughters first car (aged 17 at the time) a concour Dolly Sprint, she insisted on it! the PO also had light aircraft as well and had fitted aircraft landing lights as the H1 main beams they were brilliant over 100watt each with clear glass, they looked very impressive and definately said I'm coming through!

Unfortunately there illegal & had to be changed to std 55W for the roadworthy (RWC), but they found their way back onto the Dolly (not by me)

I'm currently in negotiation to sell my Sprint with a chap who runs a car repair shop nearly opposite my daughter in Rural Coastal Vic, he knows Triumphs previously having run a British Car Spares Co in Queensland and had Sprints, Stags and currently has a very nice white Mk3 GT6 that was his mother's from a year old. Talking to him he said he was looking at a set of aircraft landing lights on a shelf complete with relays in his office that will be going on the Sprint as there needed in rural Vic to see well ahead at night to avoid hitting a Roo!

I recently checked the H1 & H4 lights on my Sprint they were all different makes, checking my stock of spares I was able to standardize on Stanley(?) for the H4's and Lucas 100 for the H1's. I have no idea who Stanley are/were? or what the 100 relates to on the Lucas H1's.

So it looks like rural Paynesville near the Vic/NSW border is going to become a little Triumph haven with a TR4 down the street a Stag and TR3 in town, the daughters Mk2 Spitfire, and Brads GT6 and hopefully my old Sprint. Triumph's Reign!

It's only recently I discovered that the mounting of 7 inch units is not, and never was, a universal standard. Comparing the lug arrangments on, say, Minis, Jags, and Triumphs they can be so different as to defy cross fitment even with jiggery pokery. Vendors can be less than meticulous in drawing attention to this (if they are even aware). That said, the correct unit will be a drop in replacement for the outgoing SBU. IMHO worth paying a bit more to buy from a triumph specialist rather than eBay cheapies. That said, even my favourite Triumph seller sent units that didn't fit,  but they accepted return without any argument.

Mini versions won't fit Triumph as a straight replacement; some other marques will, but if you can find any these days earlier VW Golfs and Polos also used a 7" headlight with a vastly superior beam pattern, although you still have to cut off or alter the lugs to make them fit Triumphs.
