Jonah
No difference with the clutch down….sadly is it likely to be a problem with the selectors in the cover, springs etc? julian
NonMember
It's hard to say where the problem is most likely to be until you've opened it up. If the selector fork is free to move when the cover is off, then it's probably not in the cover. If the synchro hub moves OK without the fork, then it's probably not in the detent springs etc.
Jonah
Here’s a shot with the cover off and one of the underside of the cover julian
Jonah
This is a better pic
NonMember
Your "better pic" is of the 3/4 selector hub, so it's not actually better 🤔 Is the 1/2 selector fork (the one on the central slider in the cover) free to move now? What about the 1/2 hub (the one with the big straight cut gear around it)?
Jonah
sorry attached wrong pic, hopefully this is better the 1/2 selector fork moves freely and there is movement of the 1/2 hub on the shaft julian
Jonah
Is it possible that I installed the top cover incorrectly?
Josef
36 minutes ago, Jonah said: Is it possible that I installed the top cover incorrectly? It’d be quite hard to actually get it on and secured without the forward selector forks in the right positions (I’m cautiously not saying impossible, but I’m pretty sure that’s the case)
johny
so the 1/2 hub slides forwards so it just about butts up against the next main gear (2nd)? It should cover all those small teeth you can see....
Jonah
It slides forward a little Johny but not enough to cover the small teeth
NonMember
OK, so if it doesn't slide far enough to hide the teeth, then it's not engaging properly, and that's probably where your problem lies. Something is jamming the hub from going fully into 2nd.
johny
first are you sure it wont slide further forward? Obviously to do that all the small teeth have to be aligned with the sleeve so that it can move over them so try jiggling everything a bit. However it sounds likely that were zooming in on the problem....
Jonah
It seems stuck Johny and won’t move further so I guess tomorrow I’ll have to get the gearbox out and strip out the main shaft thanks so much for your help and to everyone else who’s advised and listened to this tale of woe julian
johny
Try pulling the sleeve back to 1st and then the 2nd gear synchro will be free and you should be able to move it around with your finger both rotationally and axially a little...
Jonah
If that works will it allow the 2nd gear synchro ring and the hub to be properly aligned, thus fixing the problem?
johny
Well the synchro ring could jam and stop the sleeve engaging but why and how to stop it happening again is something else....
Josef
Are you 100% definite it’s stuck? They do require a good bit of force to move.
Jonah
I’ll have another go, I’ve tried by hand so I’ll use some tools to provide some leverage
johny
I take it Jonah has managed to get the sleeve to slide in to fully engage 1st so it should only need the same force to get back to 2nd?
Jonah
I remember the sleeve sliding into the hub while I held the ball bearings in place so presumably it should slide the other way
johny
Yes but will it do it in situ? If it goes into first then roughly the same force should be enough to push it into second (both use the same detent balls and springs)....
Jonah
I don’t understand it Johny, you’d think that if it can slide one way into first gear across the balls it would go backwards to select second gear
johny
Probably not if the hub centre is the wrong way round or the synchro is jamming☹️
Jonah
I’ll try to free it off in the morning, if I can’t then I guess it will have to come out
johny
Definitely try moving it back n forth as discussed🤞
