Spitfire gearbox overhaul

It's hard to say where the problem is most likely to be until you've opened it up. If the selector fork is free to move when the cover is off, then it's probably not in the cover. If the synchro hub moves OK without the fork, then it's probably not in the detent springs etc.

Is it possible that I installed the top cover incorrectly?

It’d be quite hard to actually get it on and secured without the forward selector forks in the right positions (I’m cautiously not saying impossible, but I’m pretty sure that’s the case)

first are you sure it wont slide further forward? Obviously to do that all the small teeth have to be aligned with the sleeve so that it can move over them so try jiggling everything a bit. However it sounds likely that were zooming in on the problem....

It seems stuck Johny and won’t move further

so I guess tomorrow I’ll have to get the gearbox out and strip out the main shaft

thanks so much for your help and to everyone else who’s advised and listened to this tale of woe
