With the tunnel now fitted with access hatches it was time to fit back in.

Fitted 20mm foam srip around all mating services and then added a bead of mastic. Slotted into place and then faught for an hour trying to line up. Whilst getting covered in mastic and working in footwells. But eventually got there

Next up decided to not reuse some of the underlay but to use the Dodo mat sound deadening material. Got to admit i was sceptical but excellent stuff . Lovely warm day and it moulded , cut and stuck well. Follwed by silver tape.

As the previous owner had cut the carpet about over the footbrest and around the H frame it was likely that the silver deadening material may shine through in places.    So sprayed the suspect area and edges black.

Next up will be to try and install the carpets and other interior panels.   May have to drill new holes if i cant find the originals under the matting......

Think the prop shaft cover that goes around the hand brake leaver has spent about 8 months in total secured with all 4 screws in my car.  Can never manage to get them to all line up, to the point I've given up more than a token effort to do any of them these days!

Today i thought was going to be an easy day.  But actually became a hard slog.    Had booked an mot for tomorrow as well at 9.45 so target was set.

Started ok fitting the carpets and then center console.     Then taking the knee pads off again to fit the H frame.

The radio was fitted next.   The main channels i wanted were Radio 5 and Talksport both on Dab.    So replaced the cheapo radio it had with a dab radio. Made for tractors, trucks etc as has integral speakers.   You can extend to normal speakers as well.     Also needed to wire in a dab / fm splitter using a cheap powered splitter off ebay.

Had problems with the iso connector to the back of the radio being loose. Had to pack it with a little bit of card to tighten it in its recess. Then all fine.

Fitted a relay as well in the cigar lighter circuit.  Using the radio supply as a trigger .So it now only operates in the no 1 position.   Hopefully no more flat battery leaving accessories plugged in

 Faught to get the seats back in. Nearly 2 hours. Even though i had cleared the holes of sound deadening and made sure the carpets were alligned it was just a pig.    Should not have been really. But it was.  

Also noticed that the bonnet was rubbed by one of the doors as you opened it.   Not sure why it did this but must be since i fitted new location cones.   Could not alter the cones to miss so in the end had to remove the over rider and move the hinge forward.    But the over rider was broken and so had to fix with a couple of brakets pop rivetted on.

Last quick job or so i thought was to fit 2 new stainless wiper arms and blades as one blades rubber started to peel coming back from Goodwood last time out and the black paint was looking a bit jaded on them

  But no.  I had mucked up on the order no.s and ordered from two different suppliers. The rubbers were different profiles so i could not swap over the rubbers quickly.   Quick evening trip into Salisbury Halfords and managed to pick up a standard 11inch blade that had the same profile rubber so i could do a quick bodge fortomorrow's  mot.

Still have to sort out the mismatch with blades and arms. Should have got as a set from one supplier.

So what i thought was an easy day became a 11 hour marathon.

Now all back together.   

Next job will be uj and bearing kit on rear o/s driveshaft.    This to be done before Malvern. Thats 3 weeks today I think.   Better get a wiggle on.

Pleased that MOT obtained on Saturday. No advisories.  

I know that exempt but if the worse was to happen, at lease i have passed the government approved test od road worthiness ' Your Honour'.

Well made it to Malvern. Thank you all at club.

 Had 20 people tell me a brake light was out, boot full of spares and tools but no bulbs.   Eventually found 1 on a stall and normal service resumed.   

But not made it home yet.   Stayed in Malvern till Monday.   Yesterday evening in Brecon and today drove 100 miles from Brecon to Aberyswyth a convoluted route via the A4069 Black mountain road and back again then the Devils Staircase.

The idea is to explore here and the environs tomorrow and then bowl on home on Thursday to Salisbury

 

Rear is rumbling a bit. Car not mine and steering column has developed a shake. Both annoying but not show stoppers.   Have the rear bearing kits to fit when home anyway.

Just returned home now from Aberyswyth today.  That's the Malvern trip over. Arthur Pendragon the chief druid is standing in our constituency and 1 more vote (30,000)  might just be enough for him to take Salisbury and Stonhege non conservative for the first time in 100 years.

Yesterday drove 30 miles and back again to Aberdyfi to have chips by the sea.

Today was a glorious 190 mile run home from Aberyswyth across mid country to Gloucester then via the demolished Ballon Inn to Cirencester   Swindon, Marlborough and finally Salisbury.

Always good to see signs 'Welcome back to Wiltshire' as the born and bred moonraker returns home.

Car behaved fantastically.  Just 1 bulb at Malvern.

Time now to change pads. Sort out rear bearings and steering column shake.   Just a bit of TLC before the September trip to Shuttleworth and the east.

Couple of weeks ago popped along to the local area meeting in Andover. First time. Very warm welcome. Definetly going back.

 

Time has come to sort out the rumble from rear offside.    Not sure what it is , but will replace bearings , uj's, trunnion and trailing arm bushes etc.

First off, jack up and support.

Then an expensive tool. New hub puller from Rimmers.

And with the aid of old metal bed frame angle applied relavent pressure. Yes had the nut on the shaft a bit to stop it flying off.

And it worked.   Applied presure, gave it a whack with a hammer, repeat process and with a bang it released.   The comments on the forum were to get the correct puller. Although expensive it was perfect.   

Right tool for right job.

Tbh the rest stripped pretty eaisily and the trunnion bolt and top spring bolt were not bad at all.    Heard and seen horror storys about being rust seized and being a night mare.

Now got to stage with trunnion on drive shaft and then a hour or so lying on my back in the gravel to unbolt the shaft.    Have my mate and his press lined up at weekend to apply pressure and seperate the trunnion and shaft.

So far not too bad and obviously rebuilt at some point.   But There is a bit of noise somewhere.    Hopefully with bits changed it will be eliminated.

Rain stopping play today. But hopefully tomorrow.

on refitting the trunnion/brg hsg.  there is no register on the shaft the dimension to press /drift it back on in the manual is 

just a starting point the refitting of back plate and hub will pull too far and the drum will foul the back plate  too short and there will be excess gap drum to back plate

wonderful design  !!!!!

That is what I previously had thought.  Will be double checking dimensions as i torgue up.

yes when done up you dont want to find a gap between the hub and bearing housing. However the current hurdle is that you dont find the shaft too worn where the inner needle roller runs direct on its surface as that means a new shaft☹️

remember jigs and fixtures in manufacturing of the era was often done with a chalk mark on the machines feed 

its the holes dimension relationship with the shaft centre line thats important

it may just be one used to set up the drilling and ,,,,,,,,Oops   but dont scrap it chaps 

I dont see it will give you any problems 

from the days when quality control was only if you spotted it and near enough was close enough

Yes its only a steady bearing but the shaft is only surfaced hardened so once youve gone through a few thou you could be into softer metal and then wear will proceed more rapidly☹️
