Steve Mu
Have checked fan belt and connections to alternator, when first noticed the light went out around 2000rpm but now it stays on even with increased rpm - any ideas?
GFL
Sounds like a faulty Alternator? Have you got a Multi-meter to test voltages at the Battery.
johny
I would guess the brushes are worn in the alternator. Its nearly always this especially if the ignition light stops going out progressively (brushes gradually make poorer contact). Its an easy job to replace them although a lot of people bin the complete alternator perhaps worrying that the bearings will also be worn... dougbgt6
Steve, Replacing the brushes is cheap and easy, you'll know when you take 'em out if they're worn. Check voltage at battery. You may have a diode problem, also a fairly easy fix. Doug Edited November 21, 2023 by dougbgt6
Steve Mu
Thanks for your replies, I will investigate along the lines that you suggest. S
Stratton Jimmer
I would suspect the diode pack. Had one go on my old Landrover and it exhibited the same symptoms as described in Post 1.
Peter Truman
I’ve rebuilt a couple of 15ACR alternators over the years it’s never been the bearings or windings always brush’s diode packs or rectifiers in fact I have spares of the latter two on the shelf as well as a rebuilt unit and a Lucas Reco unit that came in a Bosch box presumably a rebuilt unit bit of overkill but keeps other local members going when their units fail then I rebuilt theres
johny
Yes Ive just done the brushes of the original alternator from a 240000 mile Citroen people carrier and I told the owner the bearings were showing signs of wear🤣but he was happy to carry on with them!
