Empty or full? I thought the gauge would go to the full end of the scale?
johny
Sender high resistance = full (as youve just proved). Sender low resistance (short) = empty. This is opposite to the later bimetallic strip type system which is why the components cant be mixed....
martyn wright
There is no fuel in the tank and the sender wires are connected? I switch on the ignition and it shows 1/2 reading on the gauge?
johny
try shorting the sender then martyn and see if the gauge goes any lower?
martyn wright
OK will do! I put the overiders on and now I'm knackered. Time for a snooze 😴

martyn wright
Hi! Tried shorting the tank sender wires but nothing happened? Gauge stayed at 1/2? Will have another go in a couple of days when feeling better? Cheers Martyn
johny
Trouble is I think as you said the needle is sticking as when the instrument is mounted normally a small internal weight should make it swing to empty when the power is off. It also relies on this to help it show empty when the power is turned on and the sender detects empty...
martyn wright
Thanks Johny! Don't think I can do much more with except have a nervous breakdown 😬 I will try and source another 😅
johny
I think you might be better off sending yours away with the sender so it can be overhauled and calibrated. Theres specialist companies that do this and I dont know if theres any recommendations on here but you would have to confirm that they do moving iron instruments beforehand. Even if you find a replacement working gauge it may well need calibrating anyway....
martyn wright
Hi Johny! I have secondhand ordered one? I was looking at mybe possibly changing or fixing the one I have, as it might only be the sticking of the dial? Or the other might be good? It's a risk that's all! My brother said he's seen a Smiths van around the Welsh Valleys where I live? But checked on the net but unable to find??

Yes with a bit of care the gauge can be opened up but the calibration, if necessary, might be more complicated. I think these guys could handle it and the cost of postage for a gauge and sender shouldnt be prohibitive...
