Generally, if you have a cooling issue and it runs up near the red under normal conditions it takes very little to tip it over the edge into a full blown boil over. If it comes up promptly to it's usual point on the gauge and then sits there stable over a range of conditions it suggests to me the cooling system is fine. Running very lean or very retarded tend to increase running temperatures but mostly when under load. FWIW I have a filled system gauge on mine of tested accuracy and it doesn't boil over even at 110ºC indicated.
