Gearbox on 1980 Spitfire 1500

Hi fellow enthusiasts,

I’ve found a slight leak on my gear box from a bolt to the left of the gear box top up plug.

It has a split/spring washer on it. When I removed it to check, it has a short “pin” on it like a very short dip stick. I popped it back in as I worried it may have been connected to something.

Am I safe to remove it and replace the spring washer with a copper wash to stop the leaking?

I’ll attach a picture to help identify the said bolt/plug.

The fill is usually on the passenger side. I

That's the filler plug right and up from the reverse shaft bolt, Matthew I just checked the single rail and 3 rail box's and its on the UK drivers side.

I wouldn't remove the reverse shaft bolt to apply a sealing washer without having access to the top of the box so you can reposition the shaft when putting the bolt back in.

yes remove the spigot bolt , replace washer and refit  dont turn any part of the gear box  the pin on the end does locate the reverse shaft

if the shaft gets turned you wont refit it

you have already taken it out so just repeat   or add sealer to the threads  which saves removing it fully
