Headlight Bowls

5 3/4" are what I am talking about.

Why are there two different styles of Lucas headlight bowl.
in the photo are the bowl and seal with the 'D' cutout in the rim and gasket marked with the blue tape, the other ones do  not have the cutout.
As I have 5 with the cutout and 4 without I am assuming that the cutout is from later cars and non cutout will be from my Vitesse 6.
The logic behind this is I have only had one 6 and have parted a Mk1 and Mk2 Vitesse saloon last century.

Picture from my Vitesse parts book, as they are a part used on other cars and probably bought in from an outside supplier perhaps, as you say just a modification.

I was looking for seals for these recently and if I remember correctly they were listed for Stags and Dolomites as well as Vitesse (and Jaguar XJS). I've checked the old seals which I removed, they were fitted in the early 1990s to my Vitesse bonnet and have the d-shaped cutout so presumably one of the other models has a need for the indent and this has just been carried over to all.
