We have viewed a couple of cars and have now purchased a relatively local car that we will collect next weekend. Im now on the look out for a manual or two, a new rear chrome over riders, rear valance (it maybe repairable) and the rear side window rubbers could do with replacement so i need to try and find a pair along with a few other seals. The bulkhead is solid but tatty so a repaint is in order.

The car has a new dynamo, battery and control box so we will see how this performs before a change to an alternator.

    Now to sort the insurance.

    Saw this on gumtree

    Hi all !

I've been busy getting the original engine of Fox apart.

I've put in my spare block in july after 320.000kms (and burning oil).

Now.. only thing I found (and my uncle) is glazed bores...

But will let it checked over if the bores are within spec.

Camshaft was renewed a few 1000miles ago and still looks good (but maybe going to fit an mk3 profile one , not going to crazy with it).

Now.. i checked the endfloat with dail gauge of the cam and crank (its 0.24mm on the crank)

My manuals give 2 specs for the crank

    -Haynes : 0.006 -  0.014in (0.152 - 0.355mm)

    -Robert Bentley : 0.004 - 0.008in (0.102 - 0.203mm)

anyone know what it best be ?

Will check it again when the sump is off and with new thrust washers.

Out of interest what was your oil consumption please

I have the same locking cap and purchased a spare  , about £6 delivered . I tried to find PJ047 but couldn’t find yours but worth checking yours again .
    Good luck

nb I replaced the rubber gasket by making one from an old inner tube.  This is part of the MOT

    Found it this time

the interior is generally ok, theres a small tear in the side on the passenger seat but an easy fix, theres a hole in the dash plastic, Im mondering if that can be repaired rather than replaced. the carpet set is poor and needs a decent one fitting (and it needs to be the correct colour)

Ive found the FS keys i need to order so theyll be here late next week. Im struggling with the fuel cap, Its a PJ Journee, and theres a code but its very faint PJ 047? can these keys be cut? Other option is a new fuel cap but in black.

Oh and now I start the near impossible search for the rear side window seals - any ideas?

I like you want to keep the original dynamo setup. I changed my mk1 2000 to an alternator when the control packed up as i was unfamiliar with the way it worked and did not want to get involved with it. I know you can get alternators now that look like dynamos if your search does not work. Will have a look through my bits but i suspect it is long gone or would not fit if i do find it! The drain valve cleaned up well, sods law those sort of things usually snap off or crumble when taken apart.

I purchased a new Dynomater for my Vitesse . Lasted 1500 miles , replaced under warranty and then sold on EBay , went back to a Dynamo

Iain here's a photo of a  spare vertical link I have with a brass washer soldered in, the original trunnion was damaged so I removed the steel washer and inserted a brass one, but on the actual car fitted units whilst the trunnion was off the car the steel washer was cleaned to remove any oil or corrosion, fluxed and soldered to seal.

One trunnion the steel washer was quite heavily corroded and took some serious mechanical cleaning and well fluxing to get the solder to take.

Don't know if JB Weld would succeed.

I used JBWeld on one trunnion base , no oil leak so far , 4 years now

I bought mine off Ebay and eventually I had to take it apart because it didn't work. One of the airways in the vacuum chamber was blocked and the one-way valve was leaking. I cleaned up the airways, put on an external valve and all OK. Beware cheap Chinese copies assembled by 5 year olds!

The £50 EBay servos will be the same source as Rimmers £95 servos ?

Someone I worked with here ran his for ages before getting the charging system sorted. He had no problems, just charged the battery from time to time. His only worry was at the weekend going to visit family, he had to be sure to be there or back before night time.

Thanks for that .with this advice know I should be able to continue my journey assuming no lights etc are on .
