yes even on the 2000 retro fit the TRod  ends are up a size on the manual and a coresponding steering arm  uprate to match

the effort has to be absorbed and uprated other parts to cope with the increased strain

    Pete

I was thinking about this last night Pete,, surely the effort needed to turn the steering will be the same either by a strong person, wimp (me) or power assisted?? I can't really see what the difference would be. You are right about the tre's being different Though just can't think whether it was just an upgrade for the bigger rack?

Where did you purchase from please ?

    Paul

I think the problem you had Paul was just a one off, when we spoke i said i had only seen the problem a couple of times in my life. I still use the Mann filters and haven't had any problems. I still think about yours though :)

    Thank you Guys,

Burlen were very helpful and had the parts - needle part for reference was Identified under the delfrin washer shaft and being a Stag item.

Replacements due shortly as the mainstream parts suppliers were unable to identify.

Once again great help thank you.

    Best regards Brian S

I got my bits from Paddocks (for a Stag) mainly because they are close to me and i can collect. Glad you are sorted Brian.

The other style with a far deeper offset looks like Dolomite or 1300 FWD. They will bolt on to a Herald but they're not really suitable because of the offset.

They aren't Dolomite Rob, i think you are right with the 1300 fwd.

    Hi,

Yes, on both sides. Plenty of clearance between the Alternator and the valance.

Not sure what you mean by the 'other side'? Do you have a picture of what you mean?

I had to space the old one out with washers because it needs to be slightly further forward to work with the Alternator. I think it just looks like there is a kink in the picture, the old bracket is the same shape as when it was used with the Dynamo.

No matter how you fit the new adjustment bar, the slot is too short to take up the slack in the new belt. Plus the 'curved' slot in the old adjuster works better.

If I can find a single piece spacer to replace the washers I will. I will see if there are any old alternator bracket spacers on sale anywhere.

    Best wishes,

    Mike.

Hi Mike, take washers off  the bolt flatten the bracket and put the bracket on the back of the alternator to adjust it. Forget the new bracket just using what you have in your pictures.

    Hi,

I converted my Herald to an alternator today and found a problem I wasn't expecting.

I got my kit from Rimmer Bros., so expected it all to be 'tried and tested'.

However, if I'd used the adjustment bracket in the kit the fan belt would have been flopping round like someone who's drunk too much beer on their wedding night................

    Totally useless.

So I refitted the original adjustment bracket from the Dynamo, with 4 washers to space it out, lo and behold, plenty of adjustment and a firm fixing when it was all tightened up.

As you can see from the puictures, the new adjuster that comes with the kit is too short and too straight, it leaves no room for adjustment.

    Best wishes,

    Mike.

Hi Mike, would the old bracket not fit the other side of the alternator? I notice the old bracket has a slight kink so flattened out it should fit without the need for washers.

Funny you should say that Pete, i am a believer in that as well and two of my cars are still on the original fuel hose's and they will stay that way until something leaks.

I think so. That's why I looked at this side first. I managed to free up the piston by repeatedly applying significant pedal pressure then forcing piston back again with a spreader.

After doing this several times it now seems to be moving.

Think a test drive is needed to see if the squeak is still there.

After the test drive a call to the supplier sounds in order....

Yes, I've also got a speed related squeak from the front. Not very loud but once you hear it you can't un-hear it. Even the lightest touch on the brakes makes it go away but then comes back again. I suppose I will have to investigate that as well 😒.

I didn't notice it until I stopped the exhaust blowing so maybe there is a lesson to be learnt there lol

If you have fitted new pads Cliff? Try taking the pads out and putting a slight chamfer around the pad material, that should stop it.

  10. Sounds as if you are on the right track with fuel filters Paula. One thing to do after is take it for another run to try to get it to stop and if it does squirt some brake cleaner direct into the carb. If it starts its fuel, the air filter looks easy to get off with the wing nut.
