  1. Hi folks Triumph Vitesse Mk1 2Litre. there is an electrical component fixed on the rear of dynamo, (grey plastic, sort of condenser shape, but larger) has a wire from it to the larger terminal on dynamo. Often wondered what it does as can't find a reference to it in manuals. Also is it worth carrying a spare for pos breakdowns. Any advice much appreciated. Cheers, Dave
  2. Cheers Doug that's useful What I was wondering (not knowing quite how flasher units work) is if the flasher unit had a poor earth, would this affect power to the bulbs. Thanks
  3. Cheers Could that flasher unit earth as well a bulb earths (any other earths do you know please). Cheers, Dave
  4. Hi folks. Went to a classic show at weekend. A bloke who parked next to me, reckoned my front indicator was very dim as I was following him. Didn't seem too bad to me but not sure. I think I checked and cleaned the lenses and reflectors a bit back. Do bulbs need changing after a while regarding this anyone know. Advice much appriciated. Cheers, Dave
  5. Cheers Guys. Thanks for putting my mind at rest. It just the noise sounds kind of drastic and hard to know what it's doing. Cheers, Dave
  6. Hi folks Since getting my choke working a lot better (cheers again Pete Lewis for top tip) and the Vitesse starting quicker, I'm now getting, what sounds like the crank mains rumbling for a second or so at times on start up. This can be daily, for the first start of the day, even though a spin on adapter is fitted and a Man filter, though in the horizontal position. I'm wondering how much harm this can cause and therefore if I should give it longer time cranking off choke to build oil pressure. Also the car has oil pressure within factory spec, though the oil pressure gauge needle wavers slightly when at my uneven idle. Therefore, wondering if the pump is keeping general pressure, though the bearings may be worn and are losing the pressure a bit. Any advice as always much appreciated. Cheers. Dave
  7. Cheers Pete Started a treat this morning thanks, Dave
  8. Hi Pete Was wondering how much to file off. Maybe about 2mm at lead, gradually tapering off to about 10mm up the cam profile. Cheers Dave
  9. Cheers Pete Did wonder about the cam or cams having wear but as the same/similar choke response on both sets of carbs wasn't sure. That's a brill idea to file the leading edge, wouldn't have thought of that my self. Thanks, Dave
  10. Hi all Twin Stromberg 150 CD carbs. My car has always run on the rich side and would start in winter well (using the choke never increased the revs hardly) I have rebuilt a second set of carbs and using a colortune the car is getting better MPG and running well. I used all the choke assembly parts that were with the rebuilt carbs and it looks like the choke bars are raising the pistons and the cam is working the fast idle . When starting the car in the morning, it is sometimes difficult to start. Uses lots of very short bursts of the starter as the pinion disengages straight away and it sounds like it is nearly starting. When it does start the choke only seems to make a bit of difference, as it was like with the old carbs and also when the choke fully pulled out the revs drop off a bit as it did with old carbs. When hot it starts on the button I seem to remember driving various Heralds years ago that the choke would increase the revs quite a bit. The cars has had recent new plugs, points, condenser, Ht leads, coil, dizzy cap, rotor arm. Any tips on getting better starting when cold much appreciated. Cheers, Dave
  11. Hi Don't know if the GT6 H.V is same as the one for the Vitesse Smiths one. The small engineering company who makes them, who I bought mine off, said that leaving them in the open position when car not in use, makes them last longer. Dave
  12. Cheers Pete My computer was playing up, or I would have checked myself. There's a bloke selling a few for a fiver each on e bay that he says have been bench tested. Have grabbed one as a spare, even if it needs brushes etc, hopefully ok. Cheers, Dave
  13. Hi folks Is the starter motor for a Vitesse the same unit as for herald/spitfire or compatible please. Cheers, Dave
  14. Hi and thanks. It's a combined vacuem and pressure gauge. If you suck it it gives a reading, if you blow into it, then you get a seperate reading. Still not a good idea?. cheers
  15. Hi all I have a general pressure/vacuem gauge. Wondering if I can make a compression tester, modifying a spark plug, using hose and jubily clips etc. On a budget and like doing this sort of thing. Any advice would be great. Cheers, Dave
  16. Hi Sorry, Mine was a Vitesse. Just hoses. Assumed it would be the same arrangement. Dave
  17. Hi joachim Changed mine a while back (Smiths Heater). Straightforward as I remember. Dave
  18. Same here. Did brake/clutch master and clutch slave 3 years ago. It was common practice back in the day when we used to repair rather than throw away. As long as the bores are smooth I can't see the problem.
  19. forgot to add Buckeye Triumph do a very good article on smaller jobs and rebuilding J Type on the tinternet. Dave
  20. Hi I had problems with a J type when first bought car. It would not engage. not disengage and even engage when not switched on. (never use reverse if o/d is engaged as likely to trash o/d apparently) Dave Twigger from overdrive spares was very helpfull with advice and sells o rings, circlips etc at a very good price. I changed o rings in pressure relief valve (bit fiddely and had to make a very simple tool) and cleaned small canister filter. These are both located behind plugs, behind the screen filter in the sump and need a special tool to unscrew them, though I unscrewed them with hammer and punch. Also cleaned and new o rings in the solenoid. Been fine for 3 years now. Dave
  21. Hi This thread has made me wonder about my own diff breather. My diff is leaking a bit by both half shafts. I had a check of breather a while back and it would wiggle about. Could it still not be breathing does anyone know please. Cheers, Dave
  22. Hi If undoing the rear of prop shaft, mark the prop shaft /diff flanges position to each other as propshaft may unbalanced if goes back together in different oriatation. Dave
  23. Cheers Pete Since tapping the valves with hammer, it's no longer flooding so far. I'm managing to lean out the rear carb now, though with the jet adjustment screwed nearly all the way in. Just wondering if it's still leaking slightly and if this would be causing the lack of jet adjustment range. Sorry to keep bothering you with this. Hopefully the last question, also many thanks. cheers, Dave
  24. Cheers, Pete Will give that a go. Girlfriend thinks I'm becoming obsessed and should take to a mechanic. Not done that for 30 years, so not good for my phsci and properly not many about now who know these older ways. I did wonder about the pump pressure output. It's an original pump. Can these over pump do you know. Cheers, Dave
