Welcome Mark, and good choise of car! 👍 My Vitesse is also from 1966, one of the first 2-Litres. You will find this forum very friendly and useful.

Lots of work related travelling (and procrastination in general) has made my Vitesse project even more embarrassing than Colins Herald 1200 project timewise. But this week I finally went downstairs to my garage and started to inspect my original 2-litre engine in the car. I was disappointed when I could not even turn the engine, it was seized. No turning back, I had to take it apart. Removal of the cylinder head was a struggle, it took me three days (evenings) but as usual I found the proper method here on the forum (here). I have said it before but this forum is a great source of knowledge. I always search before I ask, and very often I find the solution to my problem without asking the gurus here. It’s frustrating to see how people ask the same questions over and over again on fb.
Anyway, back to my engine: words fail to describe my disappointment when I found out that several cylinders where full of water and rusty. One of those moments when you ask yourself ”why don’t I collect stamps instead? Why am I doing this?” Well well, I guess these situations are “character building”... Now I have one more good reason to complete my 2,5 project. But finding parts being so far away from England is difficult. I have been considering to build a 2-liter Mk II engine using the 2,5 PI components I have (see above) + crankshaft from the rusty lump on the picture. But then I have to find a Vitesse Mk II inlet manifold (or equivalent from GT6 / 2000) and a pair of Strombergs and I’m still not 100% sure that my 1966 MkI Vitesse gearbox will fit the 1974 2,5 PI engine block I have. I guess I will find out. The other route is to source carbs with lower dashpots from a Dolomite and build a 2,5 litre engine. Given my location I use whatever parts I can get my hands on! Phil, I did attend Stratford this year but unfortunately not with my Vitesse or Herald. But attending a local pub meeting (arriving in a Triumph) is on my bucket list despite a 2600 miles trip! 🙂

There are several companies arranging ice driving in Sweden. Too expensive, this is more like the "home made" version I'm used to... You might not understand what they say (well John who used to live in Sweden for a while might understand a few words) but you can hear on the laughter and screaming that they have fun 🙂 Sorry about the thread drift Ian!

I have only driven on the Baltic Sea. Lake driving is popular in northern Sweden and Finland. I havent done it in recent years, the Winters have been too warm. But I recommend to try it if you ever get à chance, its fun! (Insurance do not cover anything when we are on the ice its on your own risk)

Yes, I bought it about four or five year ago (still have my Herald too). Drove the Vitesse for only a year, after that it has been "a project" so most of my driving experience comes from a Herald. And I have to add that I was 18 and immortal when I drove my Herald. I was in my late forties when I finally got my Vitesse and I have never pushed that car in corners as I did with my Herald in my youth. The only thing that happened in my Vitesse was that the passenger door flew open in a bend (saloon doors in a convertible) but that was very easy to rectify. Just lean over and close the door, no worries.

I'm not surprised that you couldn't get tuck under whne ice driving. No grip = no lean in corners as no weight transfer. As you will know more than most, ice driving is completely different! More like driving on loose gravel, which Swedes also excel at.

Yes, it was a pleasure John. I haven't had fish and chips for a decade or so, I will remember that meal!
No lean in corners I agree about, but there is a indeed a little bit of grip if you have studded tyres. There are usually cracks in the ice also, and when you hit them going sideways then you learn a lot about swing axels 🙂

I have to add that the driving experience I refer to is to 97ish% driving a Herald 13/60. The Vitesse engine has the weight "of a small planet" as someone wrote on a forum which can explain why we have a different feeling when cornering? 🤔

Very interesting thread! Personally I’m not too worried about ”tuck under”. The thing that really scares me is that these cars sometimes loose a wheel a while driving. It can be front or rear, trunnions or drive shafts. I bought my first “swing axle” Triumph when I was 17 (I’m 52 now) and I have been driving these cars for 30+ years. When I was young I used to drive my 13/60 “as if I had stolen it” most of the time. Never ever experienced any “tuck under” (and I would prefer not to go into details about how I used to drive it). Maybe I was a bit more experienced than the average 18 year old since I bought my first car when I was 14 and I drove on the ice during the winters and I learned (usually the hard way) about “brake before the bend, accelerate when you go out of the bend” as described in this thread. Ian, I have a MkI Vitesse and if I improve my rear (or front) suspension then I would focus on keeping the wheels attached to the rest of the car rather than worry about “tuck under”. I’m not saying “tuck under” can’t happen, but you really have to push it to the limits before it happens. That is my experience, just some thougths. /Roger.

I’m not 100% sure but I think @dave.vitesse wrote an article about arials in the Courier. Or was it in the Herald 13/60 section? Will check later...

Is green the original color for the scissor jack? My herald 13/60 scissor jack is grey from factory 🤔

The main reason that it took so long is the fact that we had our own Brexit a long time ago (long story). Everything we import or export to the island has to go through customs with endless bureaucracy and delays. If you plan to buy any parts cars from abroad then make sure you do it before Brexit! Anyway, the inlet manifold looks great, thanks a lot George! Now I just need a pair of SU carbs, I hope I can find them in Sweden and then smuggle them to the island in my car on the ferry 🙂

Here is an example of a thread that would fit in this category: using heater fan motor from Nissan Micra (or the motor from a Smart Car also described in this thread which seems to be an even better option) Spitfire 1500 heater motor upgrade
I believe that a lot of the parts for the breaks where also used by Ford and Saab used Triumph engines in the first generation of Saab 99. There are probably quite a lot of Saab spare parts that fits in our trimphs. @KevinR , please advise. /Roger.

Just to clarify: I was mainly thinking of non-triumph parts that fits (or fits with minor modifications). I know a lot of Triumphs have been saved by using parts from Subaru, Volvo, Ford, Saab or Jaguar etc. Personally I prefer to keep my Triumphs close to original spec, but if the original part is no longer available then I have no problem using something else. But also how we can change parts betweeen the models.

Hi All,
I have found a few Triumph engines that are for sale, but one of them (with six cylinders) has an engine number that doesn’t make sense to me: MH44HE. Does anyone here know which car and model it came from? Can’t find any MH numbers in the usual lists of Triumph engine numbers. I will get pictures during the weekend. All I know for now is that it looks almost the same as a 2-litre MkI engine but engine mounts looks different. Thanks in advance.
