  1. Hi All,

I guess one of the most frequent questions we have here on the forum is ”will this part from model X fit into my model Y”. One of the blessings with our Triumphs is that we can use parts from other models than the one we have (the 1296 engine block in my 13/60 is from a FWD 1300...). I think the forum “interchangeable parts” on the Sideways forum is brilliant. Could we have a similar forum here? I learned a lot on Sideways. This for instance http://sideways-technologies.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/7202-lightweight-saab-clutch-cover-for-a-triumph/

Anyone else missing this? Just a thought... /Roger.

You need to be a little careful with that inlet manifold.  While most of the Mk2 heads have the same port spacing, some years of US models (TR250? TR6? not sure exactly) are different.  I have no idea why!  They would have been for CD175  carbs though have a feeling that stud pattern for CD175 & HS6 is the same.

The other point to watch is though a manifold from a 2500S saloon will definitely fit the head, the face that mates to the head is machined at an angle so that the carbs sit more or less horizontal in a saloon - which has the engine tilted at ~ 6º.  This means that the manifold tips up at about 6º when mounted on a vertical engine (like Vitesse) and adds to carb/bonnet clearance problems.  If using SUs you need the shorter dashpots from a Dolomite Sprint.

Hi All , @Nick Jones is there any chance to find out if this TR250 inlet manifold on ebay is one of those that will fit my 2500 PI engine by looking at the part number that can be seen on one of the photos? TR250 inlet manifold, ebay

I guess the TR250 did not have the engine tilted 6 degrees, that would be a benefit. If it fits?

    Thanks in advance! Br Roger.

The hasp and staple are common to most TR not unique to the H V S.if that helps a supply chain.

Good morning Pete! Could you please give some advice where to find these TR items? My CV Vitesse have doors from a saloon and I dont have the "anti-burst catches" or whatever they are called (yes, the doors do fly open during spirited driving, never a dull moment in a Vitesse). This item seems to have become obsolete at Canleys (?) I can't find it there. Any advice much appreciated.

  4. Hi Jug. Short answer: Yes! I used to remove the roof from my 13/60 frequently every summer in the 80’s. I’m not saying it is the right thing to do, it’s just a fact that I did... The doors never flew open, but yes, the car was a bit more flexible without the roof. I should add that my car was (at the time) completely rust free and very solid. I used to cover the car in the evening and avoid using it on rainy days, and then put the roof back for the winter. It takes 10 – 15 minutes to remove or to put back the roof once you have done it a few times. I even learned how to do it myself without help from others. Quite spectacular exercise! You have to carry the roof on your neck (pefect equilibrium is the key to success) then climb into (or out of) the car. I used to amuse my neighbors a lot stumbling around on the lawn with a roof on my neck. Happy days!

On the contrary Shaun, I think everybody should get out on snow and ice in a safe place as its great practice. Far better to experience what its like, how easy it is to lose control and what you can try n do about it before it happens on the road....

I agree! I was fortunate to grow up in a place where we could drive on the baltic sea during winters, bought my first car when I was 14. No need for a driving license on the ice, and no speed limits 🙂 I learned a lot. Maybe this could be an opportunity for you living in the UK or southern europe  http://www.icedrivesweden.com/

I vaguely recall a while back someone said OD GT6s sold in Switzerland had 3.27 diffs. How odd, considering the terrain.

    Hi Doug,

I don’t know about Switzerland, but I have a vague memory that @Cookie wrote an article about diffs in the Courier, where he mentioned that cars sold in Sweden had a different ratio than UK models. Unfortunately there are very few cars still alive here (I consider myself to be Swedish despite having a Finnish passport, we speak Swedish here on the island, long and complicated story... 🙂 )

  7. Hi @Nick Jones, Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge about this, much appreciated.

I was mainly concerned about safety and the loss of a wheel at high speed. There are plenty of reports of that happening on the forums, and apparently excessive torque is not needed to make it happen.

If brand new “high quality” drive shafts where available (?) for a Mk I Vitesse, then I would definitely buy a pair. If I lived in the UK then I would probably source the parts needed for a rotoflex/CV conversion, but shipping and custom tariffs etc makes it difficult to achieve here on the island. From your description it also require a lot more parts and modifications than I expected, so I will try to upgrade the Mk I version as much as possible and drive carefully!

The only reason for building a 2,5 liter instead of a 2-litre engine is simply the fact that a 2,5 liter engine was the only engine I could find within reasonable driving distance (I drove 750 miles to collect it). Otherwise I would prefer a 2-litre Mk II engine.

Thanks a lot again for all your input, this forum is great!

  8. I think I found something...

There are settings for this in “Account settings” => “Other settings” => “Notifications settings”. The first one was “On” and the second one “Off” in my settings, now both “On”. Now I just have to wait until someone mentions me, and see if I get an e-mail...

    image.png.1206eb9d9da2b7ed71a8752a42abb1be.png

I assume there are some users who just create an account and log in here one single time, and never return. Then there are those who check the forum maybe a few times a year, and then we have frequent visitors active at least a few times a week. And then we have Pete... 😂

Seriously, this is a very useful function if it works! Especially for those who are not active on a weekly or daily basis. It could be worth checking your notification settings.

Hi @Pete Lewis I think @Roger will do the same 🙂 But it could be a good way to get another members attention for a question in a thread if there is a notification sent out by e-mail. But I mention myself in this thread and I have not received any e-mails, so I don't see the point in using this function here on the forum. Unless my settings prevent me from getting the notifications! @admin please advice. Is e-mail notification something that can be activated?

  10. We use “kind of a forum” at work (Confluence, Atlassian) and I find the “user mention function” there quite useful. Copy and paste from Confluence support page:

    "Mentions
Mentions (often known as @mentions) are a useful way of drawing someone's attention to a page or comment, or assigning a task to them. When you mention a user, they'll receive a notification by email and in their workbox; There are two ways to mention someone: using autocomplete, or via the Insert menu in the editor toolbar.

    Use autocomplete
To mention someone using autocomplete, type '@' in the editor then start typing their name. Choose the person you want to mention from the list of suggestions"

I also went for a new 3.27 diff with a modified carrier. Also a Saloon gearbox with J type overdrive.

Thanks for your advice @Steve P A 3.27 diff would be perfect (no OD) but I thought they are very rare and hard to find? Which type of car donated your 3.27 diff? I’m not planning to do any drag racing or hill climbing so I hope the original gearbox will cope until I find a replacement.

Chick Doig used to sell the Mk2 rear wishbone chassis brackets you would need. Not sure if he still does, but maybe worth a call.

Back in the late 1960's people used to fit the stronger van spring and then a spacer to get negative camber. Bit on the hard side!

The diff can be the weak point, It's not the BHP, it's the torque of the 2.5. I had one recon diff lock-up after 20K and it took out a Rotoflex coupler. The couplers appeared to take the extra torque before the diff locked up. But they were the original type, I am not to sure of the quality of the present ones. Mike Papworth is the person for up-graded diffs.

    Dave

Thanks for your quick reply Dave! I realize that the original diff will be a weak point, but at least I have eliminated one possible cause for a break down if I can upgrade the shafts. I will definitely search for a better diff also. Unfortunately they are heavy and expensive to ship to my remote location.

  13. Hi All! 1966 Vitesse 2 Litre Mk I: I’m planning to replace my original Vitesse engine with a 2,5 and I would also like to upgrade the rear axle to cope with the extra torque by converting to CV. There is plenty of information about converting Rotoflex to CV on the forums, but my Mk I Vitesse does not have Rotoflex. Can I still upgrade my non-rotoflex car (?) and if so, what parts do I need? @Nick Jones and others here on the forum seems to have a lot of knowledge about this. Some advice from the experts would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Roger.

  14. Hi Dave! Unfortunately I have no information about the history of your car, but I also own a Vitesse MkI Convertible that according to BMIHT certificate was gunmetal from factory (Royal blue now). I would love to see some pictures of a Vitesse painted Gunmetal if you have any to upload. I have Googled but there are not many "gunmetal pictures" available on the internet. Do you have the heritage certificate for your Vitesse? If not, I recommend that you get one, a lot of useful information there  https://www.britishmotormuseum.co.uk/archive/heritage-certificates
