    Tips & Tricks

Hi Mike & Pete, Thanks for the feed-back! English is not my first language (as you probably already have noticed) so I’m a bit reluctant to publish anything in the Courier, unless someone can do a proper spell check and remove the weird parts written in Swenglish… But if you think this is useful and interesting enough (and technically correct?) then of course it could be published in the courier. I could take better pictures and polish the text a bit. Who should I send it to? Pete, I was not sure if I should put this under “Fuel System” or “General” but I have a few more tips and trix in pipeline about very different subjects, so I thought it was worth giving it a try under “General”. But I agree that it is difficult to find a good heading. Cheers, Roger.

    Tips & Tricks

Stromberg jet position, fuzzy or operational definition? I will start with a method of setting the jet position in the Stromberg carb (CD 150 in my case) using a caliper, instead of “counting turns” as described in the work shop manual (WSM). To my knowledge this method has not yet been described in the Courier (?) or here on the forum. According to WSM one should first “turn the adjusting screw until it just contacts the underside of the air valve… …then unscrew the adjusting screw three turns” The problem with the WSM procedure is that the jet position “just contacts the underside of the air valve” is a fuzzy definition, and this position will be slightly different from “operator to operator” and also from “time to time” if we try to repeat the procedure. Another problem (at least for me) is that I frequently forget how many turns I have done, and then I have to start from the beginning over and over again (early stage of senile dementia I guess). But first, let us look at the jet: Threads are defined by The outer diameter, in our case measured in inches. The number of threads you can count per inch (TPI, Threads Per Inch) or the distance between two threads (=Pitch). TPI can easily be measured using a thread gauge. The threads on the jet are 3/8” UNF, 32 TPI. Hence, one 360 degree turn will move the jet downwards one pitch (25,4/32) i.e. 0,80 mm / turn. See turns converted to mm below. There are several advantages using a caliper (or depth micrometer) instead of counting turns. One is that we get a very accurate and fixed starting point. Another advantage is that if you for some reason have to dismantle for instance a leaky carb that otherwise have been performing very good then you can measure the exact position of the jet before taking it apart, and then make sure you position the jet in exactly the same position when you reassemble it again. It is also easy to get lost when you adjust two carbs in a 6 cylinder engine, and after a while you do not remember how many turns you have done and in which direction on each carb. You can find out by removing the piston and measure the jet position with a caliper. If you have access to a depth micrometer then it will give you a better accuracy, but a proper caliper will be good enough. I hope this information can be useful! Note that this position of the jet will only give you a starting point, and you will have to continue to fine tune the carb(s) according to the manual to obtain best results.

    Tips & Tricks

Hi! I know that several members here on the forum have decades of experience of Triumph ownership and I guess we all have learnt one or two useful things over the years (usually the hard way…). It would be a shame not to share some of that wisdom to others and it will also give potential members a reason to join the club and the forum. JohnD recently posted an excellent instruction how to prevent sump leaks (thanks John!). http://forum.tssc.org.uk/index.php?/topic/108-correcting-the-sump-flange-to-prevent-leaks/ It is that kind of tips & trix that I hope to see in this topic. I have started this thread in order to share some of the things I think have made Triumph ownership easier for me, and it would be great if some of you out there also have something to add. Feel free to add any tips & tricks you find useful in this thread! To be continued...
  4. Hi Eddie! Nope, the steering wheel is exactly where it should be! My Vitesse Mk I just happen to be of a very rare and endangered species. Try to find another one if you can!
  5. Text before picture Text after picture
  6. Yess! It worked! But too small, test of bigger size:
  7. No, that was not what I wanted... New test:
  8. Hello, There has been a debate about max allowed picture size, and how to upload pictures. I know that some of you here on this forum obviously have figured out how everything works (thanks John for those great pictures of your aluminum bodied Gt4!). But I guess there are still a few members out there that (just like me) haven’t managed to successfully upload pictures. But one should never give up! So I have started this new thread for the single purpose of practicing how to upload pictures from my gallery. Anyone else who still struggles with this: Feel free to upload whatever (decent ) picture you might have here in this thread if you want to do some tests. If you fail then you at least know one way that doesn’t work… The instructions for how to upload pictures can be found in the thread “Picture Size”. Thanks Kevin for trying to explain this, and bear with us who still struggle.. Now let’s see if I can get some pictures uploaded here! http://tssc.invisionzone.com/uploads/gallery/album_37/gallery_94_37_22989.jpg
  9. I would probably not continue to be a member if the paper version was replaced by a PDF-file. I like my collection of Couriers, and would miss receiving it. But it sounds like a good idea to have a PDF version available on the homepage for members, some time after the paper version has been released. The homepages and forums are becoming more and more important for the survival of our club(s) and to add a PDf version of the courier would be great.
  10. Hi! I have a question about the limit for picture size. Will it remain to be max 50 kb per picture (500 kb total per member if I understand correct) or is there any plan to change this? I think 50 kb is ridiculous, it is just way too small, and the “work arounds” to use links etc is too complicated. I usually manage to reduce picture size to about 200-300 kb, but I find it almost impossible to make a picture smaller than 50 kb. I have also noticed that we have very little activity here on this forum, compared to other Triumph clubs and forums. Usually there is more activity during weekends, but even during weekends I sometimes find that there has only been one single topic added to this forum during the last 24 hours. And when I look at other Triumph forums, there can be one new topic every hour, and hundreds of new replies within the last 24 hours. Clearly this forum still suffers from being down for so long, and this 500 kb limit for pictures does not make it easier to get former members back. A new topic is always so much more interesting when members also add a picture, and often a picture is the only way to describe a technical problem that we want do discuss. Please increase the max limit for pictures! Given the lack of activity here on this forum I see no risk of “system overload”, but it might help to increase the number of new topics and posts from an alarmingly low level to a “normal healthy level”.
  11. Nice car Michael, and nice to se another Vitesse with the steering wheel on the right (left) hand side
  12. I also miss the register where we could add information about our cars, including commision numbers, colour(s) etc. Does anyone know if that will be introduced on the TSSC homepage again?
  13. And this is my beloved 1969 Herald 13/60 Saloon LHD, sold new here on The Åland Island, and I have owned it since 1986. Third owner.
  14. This might be a good opportunity to learn how to add pictures... Here is a picture of my 1966 Vitesse Mk I Convertible, LHD. Sold and Exported to Greece when it left the factory in 1966. I found it in Sweden 45 years later...
  15. Is it only me, missing this main topic (the club and forum) here? I think it could be a topic under “General” perhaps? Anyway, I think that it is great to finally have the forum up and running. Great job from those who made it happen, thanks! Also one thing I have noticed on the homepage: under “contact us” there is only one single e-mail address (info), and under “meet the team” none of the team members have added their e-mail, not even our “communications officer”. Is it meant to be that way? There are a lot more e-mail addresses in the Courier, why not put them on the homepage too? Just a thought…
  16. Well, I agree that it gets very "cosy" if you are 4 adults in a Vitesse Good luck with your new project!
  17. Pete, It's free if you live in the UK... I guess the catalogue is too big and heavy to send to a remote island in the middle of Scandinavia for free. But I could probably not afford to buy anything anyway. Everything happens for the best...
  18. Interesting subject, I think I will change the wheel studs on my Vitesse before I have an accident. Pete Lewis = Newbie !! Good to see you back on the TSSC forum Pete, welcome back! Why on earth did you sell your Vitesse?!??
