    car fires

Leaking carbs increase the risk. I bought a new electrical petrol pump that turned out to deliver a much higher pressure than stated by the supplier. The result was flooding carbs, with lots of fuel drown on the exhaust manifold and garage floor. Check your carbs and hoses for leakage, replace old and cracked hoses. Having an extinguisher both in the car and in your garage is also a good idea.
  2. Well said John, I agree100%. Thanks Pete for helping me to understand how my flooding Strombergs (don't...) work. I think that more than 1000 posts on this forum (second to none!) and the qualtity of those advices certainly deseves a painting. Happy birthday Pete!!
  3. Well deserved (1239 posts here on the forum! ) and happy birthday Pete!
  4. Hi Barry, Loctite have a high temp and oil resistand thread locker that works up to 200 degrees C. I have not used it in my car, but we have it where I work, and it seems to work fine in high temp. Don't know if 200 degrees is enough, maybe someone else here knows? http://www.bearing-king.co.uk/bearing/loctite-278-high-strength-oil-tolerant-250ml/8984
  5. Thanks John, that was a clever way to simplify RTMS-diagnosis! Will do. Cheers, Roger.
  6. Thanks for the info Pete. I suspect that my Mk I Vitesse might be suffering from the Rotating Timing Mark Syndrome. Investigation is ongoing... I was hoping that it could be repaired in one way or another. There are a lot of new glues and chemical stuff on the market nowadays, sometimes they have very impressive strength and performance (See http://www.loctite.com for instance). Pete, did you try to separate the parts in a hydraulic press? Anyone heard of how to fix this? Sorry for drifting away from the original subject in your thread Simon, maybe this should be a new one...
  7. not sure the mk2 has a rubber bonded ( or not) mounted damper ring certainly on Vit and GT6 it has one , big saloon has a different front pulley. my 1600 was one we found the problem of the rotating markers. Pete: How did you fix it? Are new (or reconditioned) front pulleys available??
  8. Thanks Simon! Looks like a brilliant idea to have a small filter there, I will definitely try to get a pair for my Vitesse Mk I. Cheers, Roger.
  9. Hi Simon, I looked at Burlens homepage, but I could not find any needle valves with "improved design". Do you have a part number or any other info? Thanks in advance, Roger.
  10. Hello, Yesterday I received the August issue of The Courier (it takes a while to get here...) and I read the CoMment on the first pages where Vivien ask for feed.back and suggestions about TriumFest. Members can send an e-mail to address mentioned in the article. It's good that the TriumpFest was successful, and even better that the CoM wants to get feed-back from members how to improve it even further. But why only feedback by e-mail? Kevin has recently added new sections, why not also add a new section for "TriumFest"? It is the main event for the club, and it will (hopefully) be many more TriumFests in the future. Other clubs have a sections for their main events, and these sections seems to be very active, with lots of discussions. Just a suggestion...
  11. Colin, I guess you are right about the legal problems. I think it is sad that our legal systems in Europe tends to get more and more “Americanized”. Everybody sue everybody, and you might get lucky and cash in 80 million quid if you are lucky enough to burn your lips on a cup of coffee that is 3 degrees warmer than specified at McDonalds. Not to mention how complicated it has become to arrange a rally or meeting with all the forms and legal requirements to consider when planning the route here on this or other forums. One can wonder if it is progress or not…
  12. Thanks for sharing the information Paul. Unfortunately I think we all have experience of poor quality parts. One of the best things with this and other forums is that we can share the information, and learn from each other. Keep posting! Kevin just added a few new sections, maybe "Part and supplier quality" could be a new section? It is also important to include information about the opposite, the few times we buy something with excellent quality! And let the suppliers know that we mention them here if they sell any crap to us... Roger.

    My car won't start

Hello Andrew, What car / model / year?

    Heartening

Well said John! There are two types of people in this world: Those who inspire and motivate us, and then there are the energy thieves that constantly bring us down. This forum and the club in general is depending on people that volunteers in the evenings and week-ends. It’s never wrong to give those people some credit for their hard work. On the other hand it’s true that other forums have more members, gadgets and activity. This was very frustrating when the forum was new, but the forum has indeed grown, and we can soon celebrate 1000 members (921 members as I’m writing this). Everything can be improved, continue the good work!

    Colour change

My 1966 Vitesse Mk I was Gunmetal Grey from factory (now Royal Blue in poor condition). I have been trying to find pictures of cars painted Gunmetal, but it seems to be a rare color. Andy, please post some pictures here if you choose Gunmetal! Roger.
  16. Thanks Chris! I did not know about this, good to know. My 1966 Vitesse probably have the original pulley, I have to check this. That (new?) TR6 is looking good. Maybe you should change your nickname. TR6Chris? Cheers, Roger.
  17. Pete, could you please clarify this. Damper ring? Do you have a picture or part number? Thanks in advance!
  18. Pete, Thanks. I think I got the preservance T-shirt about three decades ago (!) when I was a poor student from a very remote island stubornly trying to drive my Herald 13/60 Saloon in Stockholm during rush hours among taxi drivers in much modern cars (with little success, I can tell you a lot of stories from that time… ). ONE Stromberg will give you some trouble, TWO will not give you TWICE the problems. You get 16 TIMES the trouble with twin carbs. At least… The good news with all this problems, is that I just kissed my beloved 13/60 bonnet and told her that I will make her look good again, and I will never cheat on her again with those lousy Vitesses… These cars listen to what we say, I’m sure. They definitely have a soul. I think I have to write something in the thread “old age”… I had problems finding contamination in the carbs without magnifying glass… Pete: Please write a book about Stromberg Carbs… You will make a fortune PS. will try to send pictures of flooding tomorrow.
  19. Hi! Don’t think I need any more advice about flooding carbs, I guess I just need a shoulder to cry against... My 1966 Vitesse Mk I has suffered from flooding carbs on and off for the last year or so. Sometimes I have had it running for a short while, no flooding, and now it’s back… This is a common problem for all cars with strombergs, and we can find lots of information about root causes and corrective actions on the internet. Yet, this problem pops up again and again on this and other forums. Why? I have spent the last week trying to get my Vitesse back on the road again, but these flooding carbs just won’t stop flooding. Here’s a list of what I have done: I have dismantled and re-assembled the carbs at least 10 times (lost count…) and done every thing according to work shop manual. I have taken cleanliness to a new level, frequently blowing with compressed air, even using magnifying glass when searching for small rubber contamination (from hoses) etc. Fuel pressure is max 2,1 PSI given the fact that I bought an expensive HUCO pump. Just in case, I have also added a pressure regulator… Carbs have been rebuild with “new everything” about a year ago. Not much mileage since then unfortunately… Floats are correct type, not upside down Gaskets are correct type. 18 mm float distance. Check! I started the HUCO fuel pump and let it pump fuel into a can for a while just to clean the system before attaching the hoses to the carbs. The only thing I can thing of now is: I have new needle valves, but they seem to be of poor quality. New parts can be bad parts these days. I have read that one can tap the needle valve with a hammer just slightly to make them seal better. Which I desperately did. Was that a mistake? Floats are leaking and have fuel inside (they seems to be ok…) My plan was to keep spannering tonight and tomorrow since I have and MOT appointment on Monday, but I have replaced that with barbeque and drinking wine instead. To drown my sorrows. Cheers, Roger.
  20. Hi Simon, I agree with all above, but maybe you should also consider if your car has matching numbers (?) when making the descision. If not, then choose whatever color you think is best. If it has matching numbers and it is very original, then maybe honeysuckle will add a few pounds in value? But as mentioned above, our cars are not very expensive, regardless of color...
  21. Hi Geoff, What kind of "new ignition system" did you fit? Might be worth to double check the ignition timing? Regarding ignition systems there are some poor quality items on the market, like crappy rotor arms etc. Just a thought... Regards, Roger
  22. Hi Gary, The Åland Islands are in fact part of the EU, but outside EU tax zone. The shipping industry is big here, and they wanted to keep the tax free booze on the ferries when we entered the EU. So I don’t pay VAT when I buy parts from England, but then I have collect the parts from our customs and pay tax here instead. A nightmare if I get wrong parts and have to return something… Let me know if you will visit the island again, it would be great to meet and I can give you some hints about what to see here, and where to go. Here you can get some info, but it is commercial so in reality it looks a bit different We have a lot of tourists in the summer, and a few car clubs from Sweden and Finland usually meet here and have a rally, so you might even see a Triumph or two! Maybe something for TSSC to consider? I have sent you a PM. Best regards Roger.
