Bren
Hi, My Spitfire, late 1500 with OD needs a new differential. Looking for recommendations on who to go to for a reconditioned differential. Or someone who can rebuild mine, to a good standard? Thanks in advance.. johny
Hopefully crownwheel and pinnion are good. It could just be an output shaft bearing which is pretty straight forward to replace but unfortunately difficult to diagnose so a complete change of bearings and associated set up maybe required. Chris Witor has a good reputation for this work...
Dick Twitchen
Mike Papworth's your man. Details in the The Courier, or in the 'non-specific parts for sale' on the Home page. He's in Coventry so not too far from you. https://www.tssc.org.uk/tssc/classifieds_final.asp?classified_ID=233 Dick

Pete Lewis
whine is normally bearings the most likely being the pinion outer due to reliance on splash fed lube you can change the outer without upseting the mounting distance or backlash setting any others need accurate setting up and is not most DIY possible . pete
johny
The problem I can see Pete is diagnosing which bearing it is so although it could be a cheap n easy repair most people go for replacing everything at great cost. I suppose you could argue that if one bearing has gone the others cant be far behind?
Colin Lindsay
As a stopgap, try heavier oil, such as EP140. It certainly stopped whining from my diff and gave it a few more miles of life until Mike Papworth got his hands on it.
