Steve Rist
Hi all, apologies if this is in the wrong thread, but I'm looking for a recommendation for a specialist to rebuild the Engine/Gearbox/Overdrive of my 1968 Mk3. I live in the Gloucester area if that's any help? Thanks, Steve
Pete Lewis
so whats wrong with the units ???? a full rebuild of the lot is quite excessive Pete
Clive
Gearbox will be a different specialist to engine. One is Mike Papworth. Engine, and quality machine shop should do a reliable rebuild, but be careful about the parts used, some are better than others. The other thing is are you after a standard rebuild or anything "improved"?
68vitesse
Gearbox another vote for Mike Papworth, very helpful when I broke my Vitesse gearbox. Have used Overdrive Repair Services in Sheffield for J Type overdrive rebuilds very happy with results, dropped the overdrives off, fascinating place to visit. They will set the overdrive for the vehicle it is going into, not the one size fits all from the big suppliers. Engine can't help. Steve Rist
Thanks guys, this is really helpful. The engine has been out of the car for 30 years, and I think that the big ends had gone IIRC. I'm very busy at work and just don't have the time of facilities to do an engine rebuild this time around.
Steve Rist
Since they're all out of the car now, I wanted to get them checked/rebuilt before installing them back in the car which had a full body-off restoration 3o years ago.
Pete Lewis
club engines are fully re manufactured by Ivor Searles again they do a remarkable approach to re manufacture being more involved than recondition everything is spec'd as new ,recorded . tested, monitored , exceptional place to visit I had a days tour there , Pete

Like Pete, I was lucky enough to spend a day in their factory. Now due to dwindling core stock, they usually remanufacture your own engine and have an efficient pallet collection/delivery service operating across the country. For the gearbox, Mike Papworth also gets my vote. Nigel
