Unkel Kunkel
A combination of low temperature, high humidity and a low level of skill have provided some really exasperating failures spraying small bits from aerosols recently., Apart from “ blooming” when it’s damp and cold, mainly these failures have been the sudden appearance of a “fish eyes” despite “wet and dry”preparation and careful wiping. Is the area contaminated with silicone ? -and the “arguing” between coats ( there is probably a more precise technical term) that results in wrinkles when cooler spray used over primer. Advice will be really very welcome ! -How can these be : 1. avoided 2.When established., how can these problems these issues be remedied or salvaged ? Clive
fish eyes normally caused by silicon or similar. Needs the area wiping with appropriate thinners before any prep. I expect brake cleaner will suffice or proper panel wipe is best. Celly thinners will be OK IF it is 2K pint on there, or "universal" thinners over cellulose paint. Paint reaction usually happens from old existing paints, often where the old layers are feathered. The usual remidy is to use some isolator paint. You shouldn't see reaction between compatable primer and topcoat, unless the primer is not properly dried. This may well be down to temperature. I suggest warming the panel being painted, and leave the primer being warmed for some time. If you use several coats of primer then each coat needs to dry before applying the next. Use very light colour coats after. If you have had a reaction, leave it to properly harden, then flat back. Applying very light coats of primer will often recover the situation. Heavy coats will put too much solvent on and cause further issues.
NonMember
As Clive said, though I would add that fish eyes can be caused by almost any contamination, not just silicon, which includes airborne stuff, so make sure you're spraying in a clean, still ambient. Badwolf
Doesn't help with rattle cans, but I was recommended this Upol product when spraying. Some day I might actually get around to using it.
Unkel Kunkel
Thank you everyone for your advice. The weather has suddenly become colder again, dammit- I’ll put aside paint jobs for now anyway for now.
