Hi Pete,
I recall you posting something about how an owner (I have a 1200 Herald saloon) can check when the newly fitted electronic ign. spark takes place, with a 12V bulb, to set static timing.
I can't find that post - hand have read loads of other in the forum.
Could you please repeat??
With my bro', we recently fitted the Club electronic ignition. We didn't change ig timing at all and she runs OK.
I read some elec ign units require timing adjustment for our cars, but I can't see any tech details for this.
Unlike static points timing which I used to do with a Gunson volts/points meter and/or 12V bulb, keeping it nice and easy, it seems I have to use a tachostrobe and dynamic readings with an electronic?? I think you have a tip for using more crude items (12V bulb - but clipped across which terminals, as the LT connector has gone . . . ?)
Further confusion :-
1) some fella on this forum with a GT6 was writing about retarding his ign. setting, from 10 to 13 degs BTDC or similar. Surely, that's not retarding; that's advancing??? Just a question about whether advancing or retarding really.
2) My Gunson Tachostrobe (which I fear and have never used) leaflets in the pack (from back in the day) say that with unleaded fuel the ign timing may need retarding. But of course since then, we've had changes in Ethanol content of fuel . . . so which way does the 'standard' Herald timing need to go???
She runs well enough (for 145k miles), but my gut says she's not as smooth as could be at idle or when going up the rev range.
Thoughts, please??
Cheers, Colin.

if the electronic is aldon from club then it will work just as the olde worlde small bulb between the coil neg and earth
it is just an electronic switch and as the trigger magnet
passes the module it will trigger a spark and light the bulb
ie same as when with old points (thats my experience )
some more complicated units may not be the same
the guy doesnt know his left from his right
low grade fuel you retard(turn dizzy anti clock)
best to stick to 97+ ron fuel close to what these were meant to run on 100 ron)
set the timing to the book data & advance to the best running turn dizzy clockwise get the best /fastest but back it off a bit as thats too advanced any pinking under load retard a bit more . & test drive .if it speeds up you are going the rightway and the idle may need reducing.
the timing reset after fitting any electronic points is due to the trigger point is often
quite different to mech points , ie position of module and trigger wheel in relation to the dizzy cam .if its lumpy it may be too advanced
97 has 5 % eth 95 has 10% eth. some 97+ esso has no eth added
what type carb is fitted ???
does that help its no black art or magic here

Helpful indeed! Thank you very much, Pete. I know that was a lot of repetition for you from other similar responses you'd made. Yep, it was the bulb connection info I really needed. Really simple for static timing. Suits ME (lol)!! Anx thd direction 9f turnjng dizzy (if necessary, too). Very helpful, thanks again. I'll update the gang about the (my) trials of getting chassis/body mounts/'B' post repairs saga, body-on, once I've got her back from what I hope will be the last main elements done (dropped off today!😱). Best, Colin.

Also and btw, the Club ign system was a Lumenition (I believe - car not with me today). In case that makes a difference?
Club shop book shows Lumenition Magnetronic with a Lumneition MS4 coil.
Best,
Colin
