  1. Quick update. Fitted an oil catch air breather yesterday. Run the pipe round and sat the canister in a nice place next to the starter motor so I didn't have to drill for brackets etc. Not driven her yet so fingers crossed the location is ok. Grant
  2. Thanks for the replies. Yes I'd hered about the Mrk 1 gause filter. So mine has the crank case air inlet pipe I guess but no decent air out as it's a later rocker cover with just the little hole in the filler cap.. I will investigate opening the breather pipe and looking at an oil trap of some sorts on the end. Many thanks chaps Grant
  3. Right my spit4 shouldn't have a breather outlet from the rocker cover only a breather on the oil filler cap. However I have a newer cover so it does although it's capped off. Two questions really. First will opening this up and adding some piping help me in any way ? Secondly why are these breather pipes usually attached to the carbs and do all the SU carbs allow for this or only later ones. Thanks Grant
  4. Well as a noob. Explain the main components and how to check MOT style what is ok and what’s buggered. Highlight the weak points in the set up and how to change parts. Not in-depth but mention good DIY techniques and tools required. For instance trunions. I know mine are greased not oiled so how to check for ware and how to replace. Im sure others would have a shed loads of old bits they could bring in to demonstrate rear suspention too. Why do they toe in where modern cars don’t and rear suspension components etc. Obviously only a suggestion with suspension it’s everyones event and I’m glad to learn anything

    TWIDDLE DAY 2

Thanks chaps I will try adding a sealer first.
  6. May be twiddle day 3 could focus on suspension for idiots? I’m first in the queue.

    TWIDDLE DAY 2

Ok I’ll throw a little twiddle day question in. As you know I’ve replaced my water pump and added new coolant. Iv now got a few small leaks on my header tank along the side seems. The new antifreeze has obviously found some weak points. Can I add something to the tank to seal these like radweld or is that a no no. Thanks Grant

Quick update. The mechanism looked fine so I opted to swap the motor. Visited Spitfire Graveyard which is local to me and picked up a second hand full unit for £30. Just fitted it today and everything is working fine. Wiper speed also a bit faster now. Thanks Grant

I’m guessing two speeds as it has two wires from the loom fitted to the motor. One is live but I guess the other could be a neutral wire and I’m prob i bumb ass. I’m sure thinking about it it’s the latter doh.

The spit4 should have a different motor and mechanisms but not sure of model number. This is a two speed model but only one of the wires if live on my car due to the original switch been used. Can some one tell me the model number I have fitted please if I need a replacement.

Ok many thanks I did suspect it's the parking bit and explains that for me now. I noticed you can spin it to a just the parking position I assume.

Not obvious mate I tried removing the other end lol. That obvious connection I didn't see Grant

Is that last pic supposed to be like that or a full circle. Ie has it disinterested? ?

Yep Pete not the usual model which left me buggered for starters. Iv got 12v supply to the motor and at the top red wire too. First off what does this single red wire do ? Underneath is a copper contact which rotates round a flat circular disc. However the motor will run without this connected. With encuragment I can get the wipers working but they are very slow and stop as if not enough power. How do I know if it's the motor or mechanism that's gone. A few pics. Whilst messing iv blown the fuse I think. It's under the dash on the passenger side ? I couldn't find it. It's not on the bulk head like later models. Grant

    Will do Sir. Good point

Morning all. On my rainy trip back yesterday my wipers stopped working. I would get a few wipes then they both stoped. Turning them off and on again gave me a few more until eventually this had no affect and they stopped mid wipe. Iv not looked at them yet but the arms are solid in their positions so I assume the linkage is still connected or possibly Jamed. However I suspect the motor has gone ? I'm going to get a multimeter and check for power to the motor first. Obviously those who know me know a know nothing John Snow so all advise welcome please on this subject. Thanks Grant
  17. Looks like a sloping drive? Putting more weight on the back end ? roof looks ok to me too. Always going to get a gap around the windows I’m afraid
  18. Mines Wedgewood blue and looks stunning think about a new fuse box if your doing a lot off messing. Threads on here and a good upgrade. Electric fan may be good if it’s a proper job alongside the old metal fan. All hoses and pipes could be an issue. Old brake pipes won’t help and your brake fluid could be 20 years old too. Chaps on here know much more than me so I follow their Advice and it’s been invaluable. Grant
  19. Thanks for the reply. The car already had tubes so they were reused. As no one had ever mentioned inner tubes before I suspected Your answers to be the case. My motorbike has off road wire wheels and therefore inner tubes so may be that’s illegal too thanks for clearing that up Grant
  20. Oh forgot to mention my rear tyres were dated 1997

    TWIDDLE DAY 2

Well as you know my water pump was shot so today was my first real spanner day. My new radiator came off easily enough thankfully. Water pump off without a problem but one of the studs stripped on reassembly. Lucky I bought new ones but getting the old one out proved difficult. Thankfully I had some plus gas and persiverance. Anyway all back together and no obvious leaks so fingers crossed. Topped my diff oil up too just in case because of the leaking seals. Grant
  22. Tyres fitted this morning. Surprised to find they have inner tubes. Didn’t realise that the wheels have no beeding on the inner side ??
  23. New tyres on sat. Falcons 155/80 13
  24. I’m struggling to get my head around the height percentage. Has to be 13 rim obviously then ether 155 or 165 for width as 175 is overdoing it. What works best with 155? or with 165 ? to keep things stock ish without effecting gearing and Speedo’s etc thanks Grant
