  1. Thats it and there should be some sort of short coil spring with it that pushes back against the rocker and of course a pin that may or may not have ever been used...
  2. Ah sorry read original post as cylinder 1 so 4 is more understandable. Any chance the rocker shaft end cap fell out as you removed the cover? Could it be in the engine bay or garage?
  3. Either way (TDC exhaust would have had both valves open) I think theres something wrong with the valve timing so yes drain coolant, rad out, pulley off and then cover. Check chain/sprocket and crank seal ring condition, replace tensioner, gasket and seal? Using manual set valve timing and ensure cover fixings are put back in correct places... Then drive off into the sunset at max power😁
  4. Not sure you got the procedure quite right as of course theres two TDC positions for piston 1. After setting the gaps I would have turned the engine until valves 1 and 2 are in rocking position and then see where your pulley indication is (TDC firing)....
  5. yes that was my postulation but why did it wait until then to do it? Ahhhh but was the end cap in place, though loose and held on by the rocker cover, so that then on removing the cover it fell out somewhere and the rocker was free to slide along? However was the prior loss of compression on the same cylinder pure coincidence🤔

See my previous conjecture although I now see this engine doesnt have collets as such - the spring cap has off centred holes so you put it over the valve stem (spring compressed) and then slide it over to lock. However I think it could still be released as I suggest but what I dont understand is how the engine ran so long with the rocker shaft end cap missing or how the loss of compression (the original problem) is related....

  8. I agree with you Dan, engine highly unlikely to be a GE either. All indications point to it being a 1147 (GB?)

  11. Triumph are famous for the often poor quality of the stamping of serial numbers on components so I wonder if it isnt GE that looks like an F? Easily done on the production line or maybe the other guy was using the E stamp already....

  15. Cant make out how the valve came free! Oh yes I can - without the end cap the rocker moved along the shaft and pushed on the valve spring cap instead of the valve stem so the collets fell out and the valve was free to fall into the cylinder. It might have then been pushed up by the piston against the valve guide so that got forced out of the head🙁
  16. oh dear I take it back then, Dan could be right and there is significant damage in the cylinder☹️Definitely got to remove head now...
  17. Have you got the paper type filter in the right way? The flow is best towards the cone of paper so you can see whats stuck to the outside of it and no need to cut open...
  18. True Doug but I feel paper stops far more than plastic mesh and sorry dont agree on breaking glass compared with plastic (not keen on the original glass bowl fuel pumps for the same reason).

  20. If he was really ingenious there might be a quick way to do it but youre definitely missing some bits and I take it you probably want a proper job done? Did the valve and rocker come off in your hand (honest guv!) or were you investigating?
  21. Unfortunately I think the head probably has to come off to sort the valve and guide out...
  22. Now I can see in the video the rocker shaft seems to be loose as if its mounting post attachement isnt done up enough. There should also be a cap on the end of the rocker shaft held in place with a pin into that hole and which keeps the last rocker from coming off....
  23. errr youve got a problem there! The valve seems to have disappeared presumbably into the cylinder so dont turn the engine at all. Thats the valve guide youve got in your hand and thats supposed to be fixed into the head...
