I agree with Richard, turning the lock ring it's normally pretty solid and can't be turned through the locked position as you can, doesn't sound right. Do you definitely have the rubber seal fitted?
I wouldn't have thought hylomar is fuel proof (though I might be wrong), Wellseal is and would work better.

Not personally, but have seen various posts on FB & other forums with people having issues with them, all need tweaking in different ways to fit.
I have fitted several of the Bell ones sold by the Club Shop, they have always fitted OK.

Can anyone recommend an effective fuel resistant thread sealer?

I have used POR15 Cleaner Degreaser (previously known as Marine Clean), Frost sell this as part of a Tank Repair Kit or on it's own. Always worked well for me, though I usually use a very hot jet wash before hand.

Had a rummage through a box of old bits and came across another Speedo, popped it in went for a drive and no erratic readings, so I think that's pretty conclusive it's a gauge issue.

The washer between the angle drive & gearbox didn't make a difference, whilst Pete's magic grease had a very minor calming effecting of the over excited needle but it's still pinging around and over-reading by 15-20mph still when it never used to.
Looks like the speedo be going back to Speedycables for testing.
Thanks Pete & Ben for you help.

One of the reasons for erratic or failure of the angle drive is that there should be a substantial washer in the connection to the gear box. Otherwise
the short drive cable in the angle drive bottoms out in the gearbox drive, causing it to buckle. There was a BMC service note which I have a copy of but cant manage to post a copy here. If someone emails me at <b.caswell@virgin.net> I will attempt to send them a copy for posting here.
Ben
I have emailed you Ben, I'd be interested to see that document. None of the parts suppliers list a washer there.
Darren, have you checked the angle drives. I have had repro ones that slip.
Check by locking the female end with a small screwdriver or whatever held in there and turn the other end.
I don't know how they managed to make them so badly when they were made well 60 years ago and many still OK today.
The 2 I've tried and the other one I may still try are all OE and don't seem to have any play in them.
Right Ray one of my members fitted overdrive to his Herald and cut a hole in the tunnel , not the floor , and used a unknown but ordinary
off a triumph spare hanging up in the garage , it works fine just run cable under the carpet ....simpulze
Pete
May end up trying this just to eliminate the angle drive.
Thanks all

Plenty of cable protruding, so don't think that's the issue.

I borrowed and fitted a friends angle drive from his restoration project and exactly the same thing....2 dodgy angle drives? I have access to a third one, but taking out the gearbox tunnel is getting a bit tedious now.....

So tunnel out, drill direct on the end of the speedo cable and the needle is pretty steady. Screw in the angle drive to the cable and drill onto the angle drive and it starts to get erratic, not as much as in a real driving situation but pretty sure that's the cause. New ones used to have a reputation for poor quality, that still the case?

Hi Gary,
No pics attached to your post.
The latest car values are here: http://www.tssc.org.uk/tssc/uploaded_files/2017%20Insurance%20Car%20Values.pdf
If you get the valuation done at one of the TSSC events, you can certainly have a bit more influence over what the valuation comes out at.

Hi GT6M,
The Graph isn't the best laid out as the BHP & Torque are set out a bit strange, but the guy that does it has earned a good reputation since starting up so I am pleased with what he's done and I can't argue with the way it runs and drives now.
He could have spent more time on it, but we were both happy with were he got in the time. I'll see what the economy is like when I finally get my Speedo sorted/calibrated so it reads at least somewhere accurate, I can always go back for a fuel trimming session later on.
The DFCO appears to be off at the moment, didn't even know it was there until you mentioned it so I can experiment with that soon.

Before sending it off, an easy test is to run the speedo (in the correct direction!) with a battery drill - that will confirm if the speedo inner workings are causing the jumpy needle or the drive cable to it.
Gully
Will do!

Inner cable removed, cleaned up and lubricated with the graphite powder, all back together and it's just as bad.
The speedo cable connection is a clip on type on the back of speedo itself, so I will take the gearbox tunnel off on Monday to make sure it's fully home on the angle drive. If that fails then I'll have to send the speedo back for them to test, it's under warranty.

After doing around a 1000 miles since the EFI install, I have been pleased with how the car has been running but always thought it could be better. The new engine has been in a few weeks also, so with both my EFI tuning know how and time in short supply I decided to take it to a local Rolling Road to get set-up properly last week.
I normally use Dave Baskervilles in Barnstaple, but always felt he didn't quite get it right so today I tried a local garage that have had a RR for about a year now. They were under strict instruction not to try and squeeze every last ounce out of the car, but get it just running nicely.
Very pleased with how the car drove, without doubt the best it's been in my 19 years of ownership. The new engine has a Spitfire MK3 Camshaft, MKIV Cylinder Head, CR I didn't bother to calculate but the head measurements indicated it had never been skimmed and it only had a light skim to ensure it was flat, so just over 9.0:1 I guess.
Bhp & Torque figures ended up at 74.1 & 81.7, so pretty happy with that. They done a few tweaks before putting it on the RR, the first run was came back at 60 & 73, so good improvements from how I'd got it set up.

It's looking like this is fixed no recurrence in the 2 weeks since cleaning the solenoid connection, bypassing the Lucas Fusebox and changing the battery earth.
Fingers crossed.

OK, will try some graphite powder.
Thanks.

You need to strike the hole (upright) with a decent hammer , dont hit the taper pin
the shock on the hole will jump the tapered pin out

What Pete said, works every time.

Last I heard Mike wasn't accepting any gearboxes for rebuild for several months, whether that extends to Diffs I'm not sure,
Handbrake improvers - herald , vitesse, spitfire

I made my own version of these, they do work but increase the amount of travel on the handbrake, so more frequent adjusting to keep the handbrake travel sensible.
I went back to the standard set up in the end and just made sure it was setup correctly.
