Oh, the joy of computer presentations!

In the early '90s, I was invited to speak at a meeting at ICI, one of the biggest pharmaceutical cos in the world, at its Cheshire research centre, Alderley Park.  I did my presentation on the marvellous new tool PowerPoint, under Windows 95.  Just a couple of dozen slides, that's all.

When I got to Alderley, I discovered that ICI still operated its global laboratory on Windows DOS, that had never heard of PowerPoint!    I had to speak using flip sheets, on which I had hurriedly drawn my diagrams.   I never, ever went anywhere to speak without a set of OHD slides!

Been there! For a number of years I used to print my Powerpoint slides onto acetate sheets 'just in case'!

  2. I have a 'period' tax disc in my GT6. The debate in my head was always whether to have one dated for Jan '71 (when the car was registered), or the expiry date of its original tax disc (assuming 12 months period - Dec '71). I went with the latter...

Going upon Josef's post (nice work, Josef ) I had a little look at the GT6 page.  It seems that the number of these has remained steady for the last year or two, and has actually gone up.

Andy Cook wrote an interesting Courier article on the number of remaining GT6s in the UK - that suitably debunked the 'How Many Left' figures.

  4. Just a single shim can make a noticeable difference to castor and wheel centring. When I adjusted the camber on mine, I added 3 shims to each of the brackets and left out the small shims that had previously been on each of the rear mounting points. After correcting the toe, the steering felt woolly and didn't self-centre (although it did when reversing). I added back the additional shims to the rear mounts, corrected the toe (to the same value as before) and the steering centred once more in normal driving.

I know! What possessed him?!! :o An original mini, a woody, yes, but a Crudman?!!

I've always liked the Clubman. Couple of friends had them when we were teenagers, including one with a 1275 GT, which was great fun. However, I think the main reason for liking them is that they were imprinted on my mind via my late 70's / early 80's Scalextric 300 set...

  6. Lifted from my PM to Wagger:

    I'll start from the beginning...

Within a year or so of me first having the car, I noticed a noisy tappet that usual adjustment didn't rectify. It was apparent that one rocker wasn't oiling (and hadn't been for a while - the previous owner had caked the ball and socket with copper slip) , so I replaced the rocker shaft, keeping the rockers and pushrods matched (and removed the residual copper slip). Having readjusted everything and run it for a while, I still had one noisy tappet. All were being properly oiled via the new rocker shaft, so I then ran the engine with the rocker box removed and checked the valve clearances with a feeler gauge with the engine running to establish if I had a dished rocker face leading to an oversized clearance. All were okay.

Looking at the valvegear more closely whilst running, it could be seen that whilst the no 3 rocker was moving normally, the socket beneath the adjuster ball was not becoming visible in the blurred motion image I could see. The pushrod socket was holding the ball instead of releasing (pushrod was not rotating, which was another sign). I loosened off the adjuster sufficiently to remove it from the rocker and then tested its fit into the pushrod. It was clear immediately that there was stiction between the two, presumably down to wear from when it wasn't being oiled historically. The oil was then allowing sufficient suction to form to hold the two parts together. The noise appeared to be the pushrod and cam follower tapping together.

I didn't have a replacement rocker adjuster to hand and needed the car for a Club run the following day, so in an attempt to overcome the issue I turned down the adjuster ball a little, mounting it in an electric drill and running it on an oiled sharpening stone. I kept checking the sticking / suction between the two and when eliminated, re-fitted everything. It's generally been quiet ever since, but the previously constant noise does occasionally recur before disappearing again. One day I'll get around to fitting the replacement adjuster I ordered and have in a bag in the shed!

  7. I too have been a moderator on another forum - generally a thankless task and usually the same offenders and affronted!

Our rules were pretty straightforward - no personal attacks, no swearing, no sexual content, no politics and no religion just about sums them up... Our biggest challenge was people who were friends and knew each other well, but would be deliberately antagonistic towards one another on the forum to see who could get another 'moderated'. As Mods, we knew what they were up to, but were governed by the outward appearance to those who didn't...

Personally, I take the view that I choose what I engage with online, whatever the platform is, and treat others as I would expect to be treated myself - generally seems to work! However, rules are an unfortunate necessity in this world.

I was told “it’s patina - leave it”, but this doesn’t agree with me 😂  I will postpone this for now, too expensive

There's a fine line between patina and knackered! My rear bumper has patina, whereas the front is closer to knackered. I've taken the view for the past umpteen years that doing anything other than spraying satin black is to too costly, and I'd rather not go the black bumper route.

When I acquired my GT6 about 20 years ago it didn't have a centre box but that didn't make it correct (I've since fitted a centre box). Rimmer Bros website shows centre silencers on Mk1 and Mk3 GT6 but not Mk2.

    Nigel

I was simply going by the parts books extracts on the Canelys site! One of them is clearly wrong! 🤣 My own Mk3 parts book (hard copy) says there is a centre silencer for all markets except France, Germany and B.A.O.R, so looks like Rimmers wins out. Not sure what the initials refer to though?

Exactly what I have found re the centre silencer.

I believe Mk2s had the centre silencer originally and Triumph deleted it for the Mk3, probably cost saving. But the centre silencer does fit on the Mk3.

    Nigel

I think it's the other way around - Mk 1 had a centre silencer, Mk 2 didn't, but Mk 3 did - going by the parts books.

My Mk 3 has the semi sports back box without the centre silencer - I like the sound and resonates nicely around 2,700-2,900 rpm.

Yup, concur completely about. My GT6 is nearing completion so I had it MOT'd. Given I've done a nut and rebuild I could have supposed that everything would be just so. Errr......

    The (old skool) MOT man found;

    1) excessive stiffness in steering

    2) Locking tabs not turned over on rear hubs

    3) Anti roll bar drop link bush fallen out

Not exactly major issues and all quickly fixed. But would have gone unfixed without MOT.

My GT6 passed its MOT this morning with no advisories. The tester was telling me about a GT6 project nearing completion that he'd examined recently - may have been yours, Chris?

The spring is the component that determines the output pressure but replacement pumps look quite different so not sure they'll accept or work properly with another spring...

I successfully mated the top half of a new metal-top pump (new, as in I bought it 7 years ago) onto the lower half of my old glass-top AC Delco one at the weekend - dimensions where they meet are identical and no problems at all with leaks or fuel pressure. I'd surmised they should be compatible as the diaphragms are the same.
